PREFACE
“This book presents the basi ideas of simple plate theory, and should
ove the needs ofa student of strctralenginering up to the level of
int degree. A fist couree might use material from chapters rand 2
‘nly (perhaps omitting sections 1.6 0 18 2.4 and 2.8) in which direst
Ghludons are obtained to problems of analysis and design. The more
‘Spinceated techniques of chapters 5 and 4 can then be studied, both
Fotis scientific importance, and Beesuse they enable a much wider
range of structures o be examined
Each chapter contsina a et of examples for the student to work,
oughly grated from very easy t0 really quite dificult. Indeed, the
‘ender wo can aolve all he examples of chapter 4 my conelude that he
fas mastered the subject, Since plastic theory makes posible the direct
[Seign of steal frames in a way dat snot porible with elastic methods,
there i some empl om praca design problems. ‘The under
[pordonte may wish to omit moet ofthese problems from a preliminary
Fady of the tent, whereas a designer might tackle these first. (The
fhbrevinion AEST. 1 followed by a dat after some ofthe examples,
indiates that they have been taken fom the papers set for Part IT of
the Mechanical Seiences Tripos, Cambridge, for that year.
"There are many topics which have not been discussed inthis volume,
citer beeause of ther complexity ot beense they are not of primary
importance. Notes have been mide in the text to indicate where a
