English 9: A Journey to Anglo-American Literature
Module 2, Lesson 2: Observing Others' Circumstances

CONTENT STANDARD: The learner demonstrates understanding of how Anglo-


American literature serves as a means of valuing other people through using various
types of print media and linear/ non-linear texts; strategies in processing information
connections in listening and viewing materials; communicative styles; and adverbs and
conditionals in narration and argumentation.

PERFORMANCE STANDARD: The learner transfers learning by composing short


prose forms with appropriate and creative use of adverbs and conditionals and
delivering the same through a Readers Theater or Chamber Theater format with
effective use of verbal and non-verbal strategies.

I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the session, the students are expected to:
1. Define adverbs of manner;
2. Examine the adverbs of manner in given sentences;
3. Compose sentences using adverbs of manner.

Activating Prior Knowledge
Ask the students:
- What do you know about nouns and verbs? Can you tell me the difference between
them?
- Ask them to define the term adjective. (An adjective is a word that describes nouns).
- Please give me examples of adjectives. (Answers may vary: soft, nice, quick, black, slow,
careful …)

3. Discussion
Teacher should:
-Say, "As we have learned from the past lesson, adjectives describe nouns. We also need
some words to describe verbs. The words that describe verbs are called adverbs."
-Ask students: What do you notice about the word adverb? (It has the word verb in it.) This
is because it describes verbs. An adverb tells us more about the verb it describes.

-We have different types of adverbs, but we will only study one type today. It is called
"Adverbs of manner”.

-Explain to students that adverbs of manner tell us how something is done or how
someone does something. They usually come after the verbs they describe.

-Explain, we add "ly" to an adjective to form an adverb, e.g. nice, nicely. If the adjective
ends in "y", we remove the "y" and add "ily" (e.g. happy, happily).
-Give more examples (lucky, luckily).

Identify the adverb of manner in each sentence.


1. Nathan did his work quietly.
2. Illegally, he broke into the safe and took the money.
3. He is extraordinarily good at safe- cracking.
4. Euen Kyle continuously watched the front door.
5. Rhed raised his head slowly to listen to the dial turning.
6. Kiefer laid his tools on the floor cautiously.
7. The wind was hard blowing over the crowd.
8. The emotion was fast rising inside the hearts of the people.
9. All agreed that the event had well gone.
10. The burglar was clearly experienced.
11. The actor was skillfully prepared.
12. The safe was badly damaged.
13. The police surrounded the bank silently.
14. Alberto possibly is appearing on stage tonight.
15. You are slowly getting better each day.
16. Femi is rapidly becoming a good technician.
17. Coco is proudly acting in this movie.

-Show some pictures to students.


How does the baby smile? The baby smiles innocently.
How does Pedro run? He runs fast.

-Help students compose sentences using these adverbs. The teacher uses an adverb in a
sentence as a model (e.g. The tortoise walks slowly.), then asks the students to orally
compose sentences using other adverbs.

Activity: (Group work)

Students will be divided into two groups. Each group will be provided with 9 adverb cards
and 9 verb cards. Each group should try to match the adverb with its relevant verb. The
winner is the group that manages to correctly match all their cards first.
After the end of this activity, the teacher will collect the cards. Encourage the students by
thanking and praising them.

E. Generalization

The teacher and the students will summarize the lesson:

-Let's look at the objectives of the lesson, today we learned about adverbs. Tell me what
an adverb is and what it describes (an adverb is a word that describes the verb; it tells us
more about the verb).
- Tell me what is an adverb of manner (adverbs of manner tell us how someone does
something or how something is done, it describes the verb).
- How do we change adjectives into adverbs (we add "ly" or" ily")?
- What adverbs can we form using the adjectives angry and beautiful (angrily, beautifully)?
