Welcome!
The unit of competency, " Install and configure computer systems” which
comprises the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for a TVET trainee to
possess.
The module, Installing and configuring computer systems, contains
training materials and activities related to identifying learner‘s requirements,
preparing session plan, preparing basic instructional materials and organizing
learning and teaching activities for you to complete.
In this module, you are required to go through a series of learning activities
in order to complete each learning outcome. In each learning outcome are
Information Sheets, Self-Checks, Operation Sheets and Task/Job Sheets.
Follow and perform the activities on your own. If you have questions, do not
hesitate to ask for assistance from your facilitator.
Remember to:
 Work through all the information and complete the activities in each
section.

 Read information sheets and complete the self-check. Suggested references

are included to supplement the materials provided in this module.
 Most probably, your trainer will also be your supervisor or manager. He is
there to support you and show you the correct way to do things.

 You will be given plenty of opportunities to ask questions and practice on the
job. Make sure you practice your new skills during regular work shifts. This
way, you will improve your speed, memory and your confidence.

Introduction:
This information sheet is all about application software agreement. It's
important to consider simple, protective measures regarding copyrights, licensing,
and EULAs. It’s about abiding the law when using an app software.

What is the purpose of a software license agreement?

A software license is a legal instrument (usually by way of contract law, with or
without printed material) governing the use or redistribution of software. Under
United States copyright law, all software is copyright protected, in both source code
and object code forms.

The difference between COPYRIGHT and LICENSE

For copyright:

 It exists, without me doing anything to assert it, from the moment of

creation.
 Unless explicitly assigned, or surrendered, it persists regardless of license
chosen for the software.
 It grants the creator very specific legal rights and remedies (although, these
may vary by jurisdiction).
 Most forms of copyright have a defined duration (usually life + 'n' years).
 In an open source project, every contributor retains copyright in their own
contributions.

For the License:

 It is a legal document
 I have to explicitly choose, or create, the license. It does not apply
automatically.
 It grants users of the software specific, and limited, rights.
 Unless stated in the License itself, or until it is revoked, it remains enforceable
in perpetuity.

Proprietary License

When dealing with proprietary software, the owner of the application grants access
to his product via an end-user license agreement (also known as EULA). As we’ve
seen last week, this type of agreement details what your customers are entitled to do
when using your software, and in which context they are able to use the application.
However, users do not own the software itself. Before using an application, the
customer will need to agree to the Terms & Conditions of the EULA.

Open Source

Open Source licenses work differently and allow software to be used, modified, and
shared, without restriction. This also includes access to the source code of the
application.

However, it’s important to make the distinction between free software and open-
source software. Open-source software is free, of course, but any free software is

End User License Agreement (EULA)

A legal contract between a software application author or publisher and the user
of that application. The user can refuse to enter into the agreement by returning
the software product for a refund or clicking "I do not accept" when prompted to
accept the EULA during an install.

Perpetual License

The term perpetual license is one method of selling software that is sort of the
opposite of the subscription model.

Under a perpetual license, you pay a one-time fee, and then have the right to use
the software forever. (Note that you do not necessarily own your copy, but the right
to use it is very similar.)

There are often restrictions on a perpetual license - for example, ongoing support
will usually entail an extra annual fee, and you may not be able to upgrade
without fees. You may not be able to move the software from one machine to
another.

But the key characteristic of a perpetual license is that, in some respect, you
are able to use the software forever after paying an initial fee.

Under the subscription model, your fee only grants you the right to use the
software for a specific amount of time. Companies seem to be moving to this
model, mostly because they just love the endless income stream it generates.

GNU General Public License

The GNU General Public License (GNU GPL or GPL) is a widely-used free software
license, which guarantees end users the freedom to run, study, share and modify
the software.

Workstation license

Workstation license (often shortened to "WS") is a license that may be used on a

computer, where the host application (3ds Max, Cinema 4D, ...) is running in "full"

What is concurrent license?

A software license that is based on the number of simultaneous users accessing

the program. It typically deals with software running in the server where users
connect via the network. For example, in a five-user concurrent use license, after
five users are logged on to the program, the sixth user is prohibited.

Single-user license.

The authorization that grants one user the right to use a software package. It may
grant the user the right to install the software on only one machine, or it may
authorize installation on any number of machines as long as that same licensee is
the only user.

This information sheet Software updates talks about how the

program/application works in a computer effectively and how does patches help to
security holes. How it also improve the stability of your software, and remove
outdated features. All of these updates are aimed at making the user experience
better.

What is the purpose of software updates?

A common operating system update is a security update, which is issued to

protect your computer against vulnerabilities that might be exploited by. It is wise
to install security updates when they are released to ensure your system is as
protected as possible against constantly changing threats.

Why are updates important?

Updates contain important changes to improve the performance, stability and
security of the applications that run on your computer. Installing them ensures
that your software continues to run safely and efficiently. Keep in mind that many
web exploits look for outdated software with unpatched security flaws.

There are a variety of reasons that individuals update applications on their

personal devices (think mobile phone or iPad). For example, with Social Media
applications drivers to update include new features, faster load times, and bug

Bug Fixes

Oftentimes applications have bugs that can impact usage and performance. Perhaps
the application quits unexpectedly, or there are graphical inconsistencies in the
application. Software updates will fix any bugs in the application, which again,
improves performance and increases efficiency.

New Features

Perhaps one of the most valuable benefits of updating your applications from an
end-user perspective are the new features that often accompany updates. New
features can enhance the application and can potentially streamline your work, or
even provide a function that you weren't able to before, bringing an added value to
the workplace.

Security

What is a patch in software?

Patch (computing) - A patch is a set of changes to a computer program or its

supporting data designed to update, fix, or improve it. This includes fixing security
vulnerabilities and other bugs, with such patches usually being called bugfixes or
bug fixes and improving the usability or performance.

Why is patching so important?

Software updates are important because they often include critical patches to
security holes. In fact, many of the more harmful malware attacks we see take
advantage of software vulnerabilities in common applications, like operating

To update system and application software on a Mac, just follow these steps:

1. Click the Apple menu (up in the top left corner of your screen)
2. Choose "Software Update."
3. Software Update will load and check for updates. When it finishes, it'll let you
know if there are any updates to install.
4. Click "Show Details" to see any updates Software Update wants to install, or
just click the "Install" button to install them.

The process is similar on Windows computers. To update your system software

on Windows, just follow these steps:

1. Click the Windows icon in your task bar to open up the Start menu. (If you
don't already know, this icon is in the bottom left corner of your screen.)
2. Click "All Programs."
3. Click, "Windows Update."
4. After Windows Update opens, click "Check for Updates" on the top left side of

Software Update (Mac) and Windows Update (Windows) will periodically run all by
themselves and ask you to update. Nonetheless, you may not notice this or ignore
it from time to time, so it's good to check yourself once in a while.

Note: If you're worried about messing up your computer, don't. It's very hard to make
a mistake when updating your software nowadays, and Windows Update even
creates a restore point for you in case an update goes south. If you're on a Mac and
already backing up with Time Machine, you'll be able to restore as well. The chances
of something going wrong are pretty slim, however, so as long as you don't turn off
your machine during an update you have nothing to worry about.

 Third-Party Software Updates

Third-party software describes any software created by a third party and did not
come with your computer's operating system. This primarily includes any software
you, yourself, have installed on your machine. Because third-party software is
created by different people, the way you update it varies.

 Web browsers, such as Firefox and Google Chrome, update themselves. You
don't have to do anything at all.
 Other software may also update itself, or notify you of an update so you can
choose whether to install it or not. Most software will allow you to check for
updates manually.
 The location varies, but you'll almost always find a "Check for Updates" option
in one of the program's menus. Some software will not notify you of updates
and you'll have to visit the software's web site in order to find out if a new
version is available.
 If it is, just download the available update or the most recent version and
install it like it's a new program. If it asks you to replace the previous version,
it's okay to allow that. Finally, if you downloaded an application from the Mac
App Store, simply open the Mac App Store, click the "Updates" tab, and install
any available updates.

Those are the basics of updating software. It's a good idea to set a day and time each
week to check for new updates to make sure you don't forget. It only takes a few
minutes and your computer will be better off for it. Point your Internet browser to
the software manufacturer’s Web site and look for update instructions.

Introduction:
In this information Sheet, shown are the different software application that
are designed to perform a group of coordinated functions, tasks, or activities for
the benefit of the user.

Application Software
 Application Software is a software that cannot run on itself but dependent
on a system software execute.
 Examples of Application Software include MS Word, MS Excel, a console
game, a library management system, a spread sheet etc.

 General Purpose – used for variety of tasks, normally used for school and
home, similar graphical user interface.

 Check the cable from the computer to the power outlet.

 Press the power button on of the computer.
 Prepare the Computer, bootable flash drive or any installation disc that
contains Microsoft office.
 Insert the bootable flash drive to the USB port/installation disc to the disc
compartment and wait until the instructions prompts on the screen.
