Research Paper

This document presents a study that aims to determine if aloe vera and seaweed extracts are effective agents for making an alternative leather cleaner. The researchers extracted aloe vera and seaweed, mixed the extracts in equal parts, and sprayed the mixture onto leather to observe any changes after a week. If shown to be effective, a natural leather cleaner could benefit leather manufacturers and furniture owners by providing a cheaper alternative, as well as citizens by offering a more sustainable product. The study seeks to answer whether the extracts are effective leather cleaners, can be used as an alternative, and what properties enable this use.

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

This study aims to determine whether the aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis) and Seaweed (Caulerpa
lentillifera) are effective agents in making an alternative leather cleaner. If this will become
effective, it can help many people, especially those who manufacture fabrics like leather. Making
an alternative leather cleaner is a convenient or efficient way to reduce the dullness of the leather.
Nowadays, leather cleaners are on demands especially on a manufacturing leather company. This
can contribute some ideas that can help on cleaning fabrics like leather. Aloe, genus of plants
with more than 150 species, most native to South Africa, they are widely cultivated as garden
and tub plants. The sap of some aloe plants can be processed for medical use. Powdered aloe
juice is a laxative, and aloe vera gel soothes burned and frozen skin. Other species give rise to
rope-quality fiber, fine thread, and dyes. Aloe vera plant helps to extend the life of automotive
leather and vinyl. Clothing industry is an environmental disaster, down to the very fabrics.
Acrylic, a common ingredient in workout clothes or dresses, for example, is derived from
petroleum, as is nylon. Petroleum is derived from crude oil, i.e. fossil fuels, meaning they are not
sustainable, seaweed can be a natural agent in cleaning fabrics. In this way, we can help by
making natural leather cleaner instead of the artificial ones.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine whether the aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis) and seaweed (Caulerpa
lentillifera) extract are effective agents in making an alternative leather cleaner specifically, it
seeks to answer the following questions:

1. Are aloe vera and seaweed extract an effective cleaner for fabrics like leather?
2. Is aloe vera and seaweed extract be used as an alternative leather cleaner?
3. What are the contents of aloe vera and seaweed extract that enables it to become an
alternative leather cleaner?
Hypothesis

Ho: There is no significant effect on aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis) and seaweed (Caulerpa
lentillifera) as a leather cleaner.

Significance of the Study

If this experiment will become effective, it can benefit the following:

1. Leather manufacturers- they will not buy expensive leather cleaner anymore.
2. Furniture owners- they will have more profit in their business and their sales will increase
if the quality of some antiques and furniture items are good.
3. Citizens- they can also benefit from it, they will save a lot of money from buying that
kind of artificial leather cleaner.

Scope and Limitation

This investigation as conducted to determine the efficacy of aloe vera and seaweed extracts as
leather cleaner. The aspects looked into were the efficacy of the said extracts. Although the research
has reached its aims, there were some unavoidable limitations. First, because of the time limit,
the study was only conducted in a short amount of time. Therefore, to generalize the results,
more time is needed to conduct the experiment.

used especially in cosmetics and skin creams.

Caulerpa lentillifera- Caulerpa lentillifera is a species of bryopsidale green algae from coastal regions in
the Indo-Pacific.

Laxative- having a tendency to loosen or relax specifically.

CHAPTER II: METHODOLOGY

Research Design

Procedure

Materials

Aloe vera (200 mL), seaweed (200 mL), 1 measuring cup, 1 spray bottle, 1 stirrer, 6 disposable
cups

Procedures

Preparation of materials

We will gather the aloe vera at, we will buy seaweed at the public market. We will get other
materials like measuring cups, spray bottle, stirrer at Parejo’s residence.

Peeling of aloe vera

Peel the aloe vera using peeler or knife, after that, pour the aloe vera extract on the disposable
cups.

Extraction of seaweed

Get the extract of the seaweed by using mortar and pestle and put it on the disposable cups.

Measuring the extracts

Measure the extracts approximately 200 mL using the measuring cups.

Mixing of extracts

Mix the extracts (aloe vera and seaweed) on the disposable cups and put it on the spray bottle.

Testing

And finally, spray the extract to the leather. After a week, the researchers will observe the
changes.
