“Teaching may not be a lucrative position. It cannot guarantee financial security. It

even means investing your personal time, energy, and resources. Sometimes it means

disappointments, heartaches, and pains. But touching the hearts of people and opening the

minds of children can give you joy and contentment which money could not buy. These are

the moments I teach for. These are the moments I live for.”- Dr. Josette T. Biyo, the first

Asian teacher to win the Intel Excellence in Teaching Award. Her words strike me like

lightning and inspires me to be one of those teachers who treat teaching as their vocation.

Teaching is indeed the noblest profession.

“A teacher is never an ordinary person. Construction and Destruction of dreams can

be produced in his/her lap.” This sentence shows the power of teacher and teaching.

Teaching is a very important activity of which the base of any nation and culture is

established.

The word ‘teaching’ means the work of a teacher to provide knowledge and

guidance. It is the noblest services to the society and in any culture. According to The

Oxford Dictionary the word ‘profession’ means ‘a paid occupation’ and ‘duty’ means ‘a

moral responsibility’. So it’s better to call teaching a duty rather than a profession. Teaching

not only shows the right path that the students should follow but it has a great impact of

molding the next generation to be skilled professionals and good law-abiding citizens.

Teaching, therefore, is considered as a means by which God uses a teacher to touch lives.

Practice teaching is of paramount importance in the vocational training of student

teachers. It is this immersion to the real world of school that prepares the student in making

the transition of trainee to professionals. It is one of the ways to prepare us, future teachers,

to be better teachers someday. It is a very important part of our teaching career because this

is the period that we will meet our first students, and the last stage that we need to win for us

to be called real teachers.

Practice teaching is a college-supervised instructional experience; usually the

culminating course in a university/college undergraduate education or graduate school

program leading to teacher education and certification. A required 300 hours should be

completed before the end of the semester along with requirements passed with it. The

student teaching experience lasts about the length of a semester; long enough to fulfill the

college’s assigned tasks and is an unpaid internship.

Student-Teacher (PST). It focuses on the observation of the learners, school structure

and the community. The student- teachers have been exposed to the school environment;

they are expected to take note of the school and classroom facilities, and the organizational

set-up of the school. The PTS’s shall observe the behavior of the learners in the actual

learning environment. Based on their observations of learners, PTS’s shall develop their

understanding on feasible approaches to facilitate learning considering the various phases of

growth and development. This includes the enhancement of the student’s communication

skills since they are expected to be adequate in the language they will be using during their

hands-on teaching in the remaining field studies. The portfolio is a collection of

documents that tells a story about PST, illustrating their professional growth and teaching

achievements. It is a way of promoting oneself that is dramatically increasing in popularity

and which, if used correctly, will work to own advantage.

HISTORY OF PAMANTASAN NG CABUYAO
The Pamantasan ng Cabuyao, or Cabuyao University, is a university in the

municipality of Cabuyao in the province of Laguna in the Philippines. It was founded by the

former Mayor Etok Aguillo, through the enactment of Municipal Ordinances 2003-059

approved on April 16, 2003.

Prior to the establishment of the Pamantasan ng Cabuyao, there was a satellite

campus of the Laguna State Polytechnic College (LSPC) situated at the Cabuyao National

High School. The LSPC was operating through a MOA between LSPC President and

Cabuyao Municipal Mayor which commenced on the year 1993 and ends on March 31,

2003.

In late 2002, there was a strong protest against the leadership of the LSPC President

from faculty members and students of LSPC. The protest was headed by Charlemagne G.

Lavina and supported by Mrs. Rosalia B. Pre, Mr. George Barundia, Mr. Christian

Hernandez, Mrs. Melissa Dimaculangan and one non-teaching staff, Mr. Bernie Deacosta.

The protest was founded by the Sanguniaang Bayan of Cabuyao to be true and based

on facts, with the support by almost all students most of whom were Cabuyenos. It resulted

to the issuance of the Notice of Termination of MOA. The Administration of the Mayor of

Cabuyao was left with no option but to establish the Cabuyao Community College.

Having anticipated the closure of LSPC-Cabuyao, the faculty members headed by

Charlemagne Lavina and Mr. Frank Parao assisted the Office of the Mayor and informed

them that the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila is the mosel school for local college.

Thus, Dr. Benjamin Tayabas, then PLM President assisted Cabuyao Municipality and

personally attended to the works of putting up a university. He suggested that “Pamantasan

ng Cabuyao” should be the name to be given, and thus, on April 15, 2003 the Sangguniang

Bayan enacted Municipal Ordinance No. 2003-059. The same was approved a day after by

then Mayor Proceso D. Aguillo.

Pamantasan ng Cabuyao was inaugurated on July 31, 2003, birthday of its founding

Mayor and it was personally inaugurated by no less than President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo

on June 19, 2003 on the occasion of the 107th birthday of Dr. Jose Rizal.

Today, under the new leadership of Hon. Mhel Gecolea(the incumbent mayor) and

the able assistance of At(the chairperson of the Committee on Education of the SB),

Educational reforms have been introduced, new and better systems have been put in place,

and old practices have been put into sound and soil written policies and procedures.

The current University President, Dr. Isabel F. Inlayo, mans the university on day-to-

day basis. He has seriously taken the job of Presiding over the affairs of the university as

proven by his attendance even in faculty meetings.

She has enjoined the able leadership of Prof. Albert D. Madrigal (founding vice president

for academic affairs of the City College of Calamba in 2006) to Pamantasan ng Cabuyao in

2008. Prof. Madrigal brought in change initiatives that are meant to raise the bar of quality

and standars in community education. Drawing from his experience of more than 10 years at

the University of the Philippines Los Banos and 5 years at De la Salle University, he boldly

challenged the university- teachers, administrators, and students- to work together towards

making the university a model for other locally-funded educational institutions.

Indeed, in so short a time, Pamantasan ng Cabuyao has been visited by other LGU’s

that are intending to establish local colleges- pattern their initiatives after that of PnC.

GOAL
Pulo National High School is committed to provide quality education to the youth

and to promote intellectual, moral, spiritual as well as physical and social, technological and

vocational efficiency In terms of academic and non-academic competitions, the school must

maintain and improve its performance for the said competitions.

HISTORY OF
PULO NATIONAL HIGHSCHOOL
Pulo National High School is one of the four secondary schools in the whole

municipality of Cabuyao. It sits along the national road of Calamba-Biñan route. The school

shared-in with the Pulo Elementary School premise since from the start.

In nineteen seventy five (1975); Pulo Barangay High School was established through

the joint initiative of the late, Barangay Captain Antonino Mandigma, the barrio chief that

year; Mr. Pedro Ricarte the chair of the committee on education of that same year; Mrs.

Eriberta Cayamanda the assigned principal of Pulo Elementary School and her husband Mr.

Rodolfo B. Cayamanda as co-associate (deceased).

The goal of founding the secondary school was to retort the big probability and

concern of the elementary graduates to continue their next level of education that is just a

stone threw from their homes. In addition, this is a way out to parents who cannot afford to

send their children to private institution.

The first year of existence of Pulo Barangay High School marked the pioneer

mentors namely; Mrs. Lucena M. Doyac (nee Mendoza) and Mr. Proceso Dinulos

(deceased). It started from a one hundred multi-age enrollees, mostly ages ranged from 16-

20 years of age for the first year level and that year Mrs. Cayamanda occupied the dual sit as

principal of both the elementary and high school departments.

In 1977, Mrs. E. Cayamanda retired as principal of school, and her husband, Mr.

Rodolfo B. Cayamanda took the sit as her vice. Every school calendar indices a hike on its

enrollees and likewise teaching force needs an additional as well. Migration due to factories

in the barangay premise was one of the big factors that escalate its enrollment. That was

uncontrollable; the school staff simply could not decline or cut off such. However,

secondary teachers were already take into service.

Twelve years later, Mr. Cayamanda was transferred in the District office, Mrs. Lilia

L. Cadiz take the vacated seat as Teacher In-Charge, and was promoted as Head Teacher

III, and three years after, her item was reclassified into Principal I, and lastly due to superb

performances as chief of the school, she is now a Principal II.

Pulo Barangay High School was transformed into Pulo National High School last

nineteen eighty eight (1988) and for many years its enrollment is increasing rapidly as well

as it produces graduates who attained their success. Some of them have been in other

countries and most are in their own chosen career here in the Philippines. The local

government unit is always helping the school in all their activities and supporting the school

in its financial aspect. Some factories are helping deserving students through scholarship.

The teachers are active and doing their best to impart their knowledge to the students. Some

of them are in their graduate studies and some are equipped with lots of trainings and

seminars. The school is one of the five pilot schools in Second Congressional district of

Laguna. It was sponsored by the provincial government through the leadership of Governor

Teresita S. Lazaro, a very helpful and loving governor of Laguna and Mayor Proceso “Etok”

Aguillo of Cabuyao until the present mayor Mayora Nila Aguillo, the wife of the former

mayor. The Project APEX or Applied Academic for Excellence was in the trainingship of

SEAMEO – INNOTECH, the ever- supportive institution who are always in full supervision

in the implementation of the project. The project will end this school year 2006. The

curriculum that they implemented was successful to the students, teachers, administrators as

well as in the community. Through the Contextual Teaching and Learning Approach, the

students learned more to become independent and the teacher acts only as a facilitator. The

students become the crowning glory of the school and because of that, the enrollment

increased and the school become one of the performing school in the division of Laguna.

From the original two teachers now the school has already sixty teachers. Still the school is

situated in the vicinity of Pulo Elementary School until now.

The humble history of Pulo National High School is dedicated to all parents, students

and teachers who believe in the schools mission and vision. “In everything you do, put God

first, and he will direct you and crown your efforts with success” (Proverbs 3:4-5). With the

commitment of the first stakeholders of the school and being guided by God’s word about

where the hearts and minds should be, Pulo National High School will always stand up as

beacon of excellent education with proper values as its guiding light.

Orientation Day

Orientation and Assignment of Cooperating Teachers, I was assigned to Mr. Lee A.

Mandigma, a grade 10 English Teacher. He is an epitome of an effective teacher who could

make a 50-minute class period full of fun and a little bit of serious in learning. His voice is

very modulated and he possess authority when it comes to classroom management. While

observing his class, I noticed that he has the command of language and he is good with

engaging the students in the discussion.

First Week of Teaching

This week was my first week of teaching. I was quite nervous this week, because I

am not used to the athmosphere of being a teacher yet. I handled three sections and it is very

challenging for they are all good. We faced changes in terms of class hours, from a 50-

minute class, it wa reduced to 45-minute class.

The Drive Within Me. Lavarnn!!!

This was the roughest week of my life. I felt so tired and stressed out. I even

questioned myself if this is really the life that I want to live---if teaching is really for me. But

as the days go by, I have come to realized that it is not really that hard. I just have to have to

hold on to my drive, and knowing that I have these people behind my back and always

willing to help me and give me courage, and of course I don’t want to disappoint them so I

tried everything to make things work out. And there is always a room for improvement.

December 10-14, 2018

Last Week of December

For the whole week, we had no classes because of the students of grade 9 have

parttaken the NCAE or National Career Assessment Examination. Our rooms will be used

for the said event. And December 14 was the last school day of December. We had our

joyful year end party.

The Satisfaction and Joy of Being an Educator

I’m so glad that they were able to absorb all the learning that I have inculcated to

them. Since my real goal is to impart the knowledge that I have to my students, I have felt

such joy and satisfaction knowing that I succeeded on doing so.

January 21-26, 2019

Overload of Nervousness

This week, my students were very attentive and having fun. I have executed every

single thing that I have written in my lesson plan and in addition to that this is also the week

that my professor made an observation to our classes, of course I was nervous because I

might get lost in the middle of my lesson. I feared that I might commit a mistake. But in the

end it was a successful day. And a successful week.

Teacher’s Prayer

Lord Jesus, when you lived and worked and talked amongst men in Palestine, they called
you Teacher.

Help me to remember the greatness of the work which has been given to me to do; that I
worked with the most precious material in the world, the mind of youth. Help me always to
remember that I am making marks upon that mind which time will never rub out.

Give me patience with those who are slow to learn and even with those who refuse to learn.
When I have to exercise discipline, help me to do so in sternness and yet in love. Keep me
from the sarcastic and biting tongue, and help me always to encourage those who are doing
their best, even that best is not very good.

Help me to help my students, not only to store things in their memories, but to be able to use
their minds, and to think for themselves. And amidst all the worries and frustrations of my
job, help me to remember that the future of the nation and of the world is in my hands.

Amen.

Tips for Student Teachers from Former

Student Teacher
by Nick Jaworski

“Student teaching is probably the hardest time in a lot of young educators’ lives. It marks
the beginning of the single biggest change they’re going to experience.”

Recently, I asked a handful of recent student teachers and young music educators to

reflect on their own student teaching experiences in the hopes that they would provide

some insight into how to get the most out of it. While definitely not all-encompassing,

their reflections and advice are invaluable and I hope that future student teachers take

them to heart.

Before you student teach:

Seek out teaching opportunities before student teaching.

While there is no avoiding the awkward transition from full-time college student to

Professional teacher that is the student teaching experience, you will be best served if you

seek out opportunities to teach early and often during your undergraduate career. Yes,

these early teaching experiences will help you practice and refine your

Teaching strategies, but they will also provide you with opportunities to practice being in

front of young people. Private lessons are a great start, but try to find situations that allow

84
you to be in front of groups of children. This will give you the chance to understand the

most effective ways to interact with young musicians. Music teachers in your area are

always in need of quality help. Simply send them an email and ask if you can come help

out on a consistent basis. There is simply no substitute for experience.

Communicate with your cooperating teacher.

As soon as possible, try to meet your cooperating teacher and begin the process of

developing a positive professional relationship with him or her. Of course, many music

departments have more than one music teacher on staff, so it is important that you try and

develop good relationships with all of the teachers around you. Early in this “getting to

know each other” process, try to ascertain what responsibilities you can expect to have

while student teaching. It is not uncommon for a pre-service teacher to essentially take

over the teaching responsibilities for an ensemble or class (music theory or music

technology, for example). As soon as you find out what your responsibilities are, attempt

to get your hand on as many materials as possible so that you’ll be ready to teach on day

one. Not only will this

impress your cooperating teacher, but it will mean that your students will be getting the

quality educational experience that they deserve.

Clear your calendar & save your money.

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION Page

85
Even if you’re cooperating teacher says that you have no after-school commitments

(which is highly unlikely), make sure you have as few evening conflicts as possible.

Student teaching is going to make you mentally and physically exhausted. You need as

much time to both recover from your current day and plan for the next one as possible.

Participating in collegiate ensembles may be fun, but keep in mind that student teaching

is an entirely new experience that will wear you out. As far as part-time jobs go,

obviously some people aren’t in a position to leave their job, but perhaps by planning

ahead and saving money, you can minimize the amount of hours you will need to work.

Have a “pedagogy boot camp”.

When you get a chance (perhaps after finals and before student teaching), take a couple of

weeks where you spend 2-3 hours per day simply reviewing and reflecting on all of the

important pedagogical concepts that you imagine you’ll need during student teaching. But

taking the time to remind yourself of the things you may have forgotten, you’ll be more

effective in the classroom from day one – which allows you to focus on other important

concepts that you still need to learn.

During Student Teaching: The Easy(ish) List

Get plenty of sleep.

When I started my teaching career, someone once told me, “It’s not getting up early that

is difficult – you get used to that. It’s going to bed early – that’s the hard part.” He

86
couldn’t have been more right. I had spent years starting homework after The Daily Show

and, while that’s fine when you don’t have class until 10 AM and can take a nap in the

middle of the day, it simply won’t work when you have to wake up before 6 AM and then

be at your best in front of large groups of people. Start practicing going to bed early and

then keep a consistent bedtime.

Work ahead as much as possible.

If you know you’re going to be teaching a lesson on rhythm or conducting a specific

piece, get working on it right away. This will limit the amount of stress you encounter
throughout student teaching. Develop this habit during student teaching and you’ll find
your professional career much less stressful.

Try everything your cooperating teacher suggests at least once.

There are going to be moments when your cooperating teacher gives you a suggestion
that you may not agree with. It would be in your best interest to give it a shot anyway.
This is true for a couple of reasons. First, it might actually work! The cooperating teacher
is going to know their students better than you do and they’ve had more time to develop
teaching strategies that work. Secondly, by trying every suggestion, you show the
cooperating teacher that you trust them. This will be received positively and will only
serve to create a stronger mentor/mentee relationship.

If you don’t understand something, ask.

These questions can range from the simple, “Where does this piece of paper go?” to the
more complex, “Why am I teaching this concept?” Whatever the question is, do not be
afraid to ask clarifying questions anytime that you are confused. By asking questions

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION Page

87
early, you’ll be able to put yourself in the best position possible to succeed and then built
on that success.

The not-so-easy list

Accept failure.

Not everything is going to go the way you planned it. In fact, when you start student

teaching, most things won’t! It is your job to recognize that through failure you grow as a

teacher.

Be open with your cooperating teacher. If there are things in your life that are

proving to be difficult and you feel that they are getting in the way of your teaching, you

might consider sharing the problem with your cooperating teacher. Now, this does not

apply to minor issues like you didn’t get enough sleep the night before or you forgot to

DVR American Idol. This step applies to issues related to your health or home life that

are impacting your ability to fully commit and focus on student teaching.

As much as you may love your students, they are “not yours”.

Overall, the way your students behave while you’re in front of them is a reflection of your

cooperating teacher – not you. For many undergrads who students teach with a successful

large ensemble, this is especially true. More often than not, you will learn simply how to

maintain the classroom environment of your cooperating

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION Page

88
teacher. There is no doubt that this knowledge is very valuable. However, what you

probably won’t see is the process the teacher went through to establish those classroom

expectations. That takes time and experience. With this in mind, be aware that some of

the techniques the cooperating teacher will work with your teacher personality and beliefs

– others won’t. Take lots of notes, try everything out, and then realize that you’ll be

starting from scratch at your first job.

For the record, this is also true for programs where student focus is limited. Your inability

to gain control of a classroom that has little control to begin with should not be how you

gauge your success as a teacher. You simply won’t be able to transform a classroom

culture in 16 weeks, especially as the student teacher. Learn what you can and…Enjoy

the small victories.

As mentioned earlier, failure is a part of the learning process – this is as true for you as it

is for your students. With that in mind, you need to remember the little moments that

went according to plan and enjoy them. This is easier said than done, for sure, but it’s

very important. In a day of mixed results, it can be easy to forget that you probably had a

ton of small victories along the way. Do whatever you can to remember those moments

and reflect on what made them successful.

Your student teaching peers are going through the same things you are.

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION Page

89
Sometimes you talk to your student teaching friends and all you hear is how great

everything is going. While things are probably going pretty well, often time’s student

teachers feel that sharing the “failures” is a sign of weakness. This is simply not true! By

recognizing the areas in which you need to improve, you can start the process of actually

improving. Be open and honest with your peers. In the long run, it will benefit all of you.

All in all, student teaching is a time of great change and challenge. Keep in mind that the

time is fleeting – grab as much knowledge and experiences as you can! There will be

successes and failures, it’s simply the nature of the beast and it’s what makes student

teaching so rewarding. Good luck out there!

STAGES IN PRACTICE TEACHING

Following are the stages in practice teaching:

Primary Stage - It is necessary to make a trip of student teachers to that particular

school, where they are going for practice teaching. The main aim of this tour is to see the

concerned head teacher, class teachers and school staff in order to acquire information about

school and its environment. Student teachers must observe the teaching methods of school,

methods of concerned class teacher, copies or notebooks of the students and their usual

routine. On return from the tour student teachers must have the details about scheme of

studies, age of the students, strength of the class, abilities and specific problems of the

students, timing of the school, textbooks and teaching aids.

90
Preparation of Lesson - For the preparation of lesson student teachers must know the

subject, the relevant books and audiovisual aids. Which he / she are going to teach? Prepared

lessons give confidence to the teacher. Student teachers and supervisor can reform the

teaching learning process after its evaluation.

 Qualities of a Good Lesson

A good lesson has the following qualities:

1.) Lesson planning should be in complete detail.

2.) Lesson should be interesting.

3.) Effective and timely use of teaching methods and teaching aids.

4.) Student should be ready for learning.

5.) Students should be involved practically in teaching learning process.

6.) Lesson should be taught in professional and friendly environment.

7.) All students should be given same attention by keeping in view their individual

differences. Teaching in Classroom.

The stage of teaching in the classroom is known as practice teaching. Student

teachers while teaching in the classroom passes through different steps of his / her teaching

(Introduction, presentation, recapitulation) and concerned teacher / supervisor assesses

/ observes his / her lesson.

Evaluation of Teaching Practice

In order to evaluate the teaching practice supervisor observe the student teacher

while teaching in the classroom. Supervisor evaluates / observes the punctuality,

lesson planning, teaching methods, use of audio visual aids, adequacy of audio visual aids,

pitch of voice, dress, start and end of lesson, interest of the students, discipline of class,

use of black / white board, students’ notebooks and objectives of the lesson. Participation in

Other routine Works of School Teaching in the classroom is not only the objective of

teaching practice, but also to provide training in all activities / work which student teachers

are going to perform in future during their job. For this purpose they have to spend whole day

in school as teacher. They have to participate in all the activities of school e.g preparation of

timetable, preparation and maintenance of different registers, evaluation of class work and

home work, arrangement of tutorial groups, sports / games, morning assembly, co-curricular

activities, duty during recess, duty as day master, duty before and after school timing,

decoration of classroom, preparation and maintenance of attendance board, news board,

information board, look after and arrangements of A V aids room, home economics room,

science laboratories and library.

Teacher’s Creed
I believe I have been called by God to teach.

I believe in children...young and old...black and white...rich and poor....each in need of learning.
I believe in blackboards, chalk dust, textbooks, and computers for each have a part in imparting
knowledge.
I believe the love I give to my students will someday be reflected in their lives.
I believe the gift of teaching is not measured simply by marks, enrolment, or the end of the school
year.
It is in the witness I give and the fullness of the life lived by those I teach.
I believe I have the power to lead those in need of learning to the threshold of their own minds.
I believe in my giftedness to use each of the tools available no matter how new or old...For the light
of knowledge in the eyes of another is my goal.
I believe teaching is more than tests, diplomas, paperwork, and fundraising.
It is the values I breathe daily into another...slowly.
It is in the faith I share in Jesus...ever changing and growing...never ending.
I believe my success today goes unnoticed...until those I teach and touch can stand alone and say "in
my life I have learned..."
I believe if I have taught and touched one person...in God's name...I have used my gift to me justly...
And can humbly say...
I believe in teaching....
I AM A TEACHER!!
