Capstone Project Synopsis PEB 801

This document outlines a capstone project proposal for a topographic survey to design a dam, pipeline, and access road in Naselesele Village, Taveuni, Fiji. The objectives are to conduct a topographic survey of the proposed sites, compile existing plans and elevation data, and design the infrastructure using the survey data. A Leica surveying machine will be used to collect 3D spatial data of the area to develop design plans, schematics, and a 3D model. Upon completion, the project aims to provide drawings, point clouds, photographs, and schedules to support the engineering design of a new water source for the village.

SYNOPSIS OF THE CAPSTONE PROJECT

Course: Bachelor (Honors) Civil Engineering. Supervisor: Mr. Rohitesh Prassad.

Title: Topographic Survey for Dam, Pipeline & Access Road Design.
(Naselesele Village, Taveuni)

NAME: PENI CIKAI ID #:2016137860

1. .Introduction:
Topographic study is just the account of directions and tallness information of existing highlights situated in a
specific study territory. This information can be utilized to make spot stature maps, shape maps, or
progressively complex landscape models of the reviewed zone. The aim of this project is to do a
topographical survey for Dam, Pipe Alignment & Access road design at Naselesele village in the Island of
Taveuni.
A topographic survey locates and maps the physical features of a property or landscape. It also indicates
varying levels of elevation, vegetation, and underground utility installations

2. Background:
Taveuni region is currently supplied with water surface sources and a number of boreholes, which is
chlorinated before it enters the distribution system. The existing infrastructure is aging and required
upgrading, the reservoir do not have requires an alternative source of water to cater for such crisis.
The region is subjected to periodic droughts, which result in water shortages for both existing consumers and
other people in the study area who rely on local sources of supply.
Naselesele Village falls towards the Northern side of Taveuni. The village has a borehole, which fills its own
reservoir. Due to the recent drought, the potential of this source dropped, thus, required demand cannot be
met.
Our Team has located a source at the upper Mua area through Water Authority where a gravity Dam is likely
to be constructed and this will replace the Naselesele source.
Therefore, this research will based on the topographic surveying of pipeline route, dam location and access
road through Naselesele village.

3. Study Area Overview:

The proposed site for our project is NaseleseleVillage situated in the island of Taveuni

4. Objectives:

 To compile plans and Trig information in the area for traverse closure and checking
 To conduct topographical survey of the possible route, Dam location and access road within our study
area.
 To design a gravity dam, access road and pipe alignment using our topographical data

5. Methodology:

The proposed strategies for our information gathering are as per the following.

 The utilization of advanced overview machine. (TS06 Leica Machine)

 Maps and Approved Survey Plans
 12D programming for shape, plan and arrangement.

Key Outcomes:

The expected outcome of this research is to produce:

 Drawings: Plans, elevations sections, lighting plans etc.
 3D Points Clouds: Data helpful to construct a 3D model of the site in a program, for example,
Autodesk Revit.
 Photographs: Useful for individuals searching for data about the site.

 Schedules: Information, for example, assessment chamber modifies, pipe measurement sizes,
and so on can be produce.
