This document is a comprehensive examination for a Finite Element Methods course. It contains 4 questions regarding finite element analysis of different structures. Question 1 involves determining interface temperatures and heat flux through a composite wall using 3 finite elements. Question 2 is to determine nodal displacements, slopes, internal forces, and reactions for 2 beams. Question 3(a) requires obtaining the strain-displacement relation matrix and determining strains for a triangular element. Question 3(b) is to determine equivalent point loads for an axisymmetric pressure loading. Question 4 asks to determine natural frequencies and mode shapes for a stepped bar using given properties.

Second Semester 2018-2019

Comprehensive Examination
(EC-3 Regular)

Course No. : DE ZG513

Course Title : FINITE ELEMENT METHODS
Nature of Exam : Open Book
Weightage : 40% No. of Pages =2
Duration : 3 Hours No. of Questions = 4
Date of Exam : 04/05/2019 (FN)
Note:
1. Please follow all the Instructions to Candidates given on the cover page of the answer book.
2. All parts of a question should be answered consecutively. Each answer should start from a fresh page.
3. Assumptions made if any, should be stated clearly at the beginning of your answer.

Q.1. For the composite wall shown in Fig. 1, determine the interface temperatures. What is the
heat flux through the 8-cm portion? Use the finite element method. Use three elements
with the nodes shown. 1 cm = 0.01 m. Assume unit area. [10]

Q.2. For the beams shown in Fig.2 determine the nodal displacements and slopes, the forces in
each element, and the reactions. [10]

Q.3 (a) For the triangular element shown in Fig. 3, obtain the strain–displacement relation
matrix B and determine the strains εx, εy, and γxy.

Q.3 (b) For the axisymmetric pressure loading shown in Fig. 4 determine the equivalent point
loads F1, F2, F3, F4, F7, and F8. [10]

Q.4. Determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes for the stepped bar shown in Fig. 5.
Take density as 7850 kg/m3 and E = 200 GPa. [10]
