Week 9 Blog

The editing process took over a week and a half to complete due to the addition of complex effects. Skills developed during editing included masking objects and clips, color correcting to convey mood, and creating transitions like "dip to white" and "glitch" effects. Issues encountered were lagging from heavy project files, which were fixed by rendering sections separately. Masking was also simplified at times to improve the final product. The producer was on track for the week.

WEEKLY JOURNALS

Week Nine – Editing

EDITING

How did you find the editing process? The editing process went really well. I managed to edit easily
as I have had lots of practise from editing previous
productions. However, the editing did take a while to do, over
a week and a half, as I had decided to add lots of complex
effects that took a while to create. It was also very tedious at
some points, especially when syncing the song to the videos
as it felt like I was repeatedly doing the same thing. However,
it was worth it.

What skills did you have to One skill that I developed when editing was my ability to mask.
learn/develop during the editing I decided to mask a lot of clips to move certain parts of the
process? video around, and by doing this multiple times I began to get
better at it, creating more precise masks with better outlines. I
also learnt to do more complicated masking, such as using
multiple masks of the same clip in one transition. I also learnt
how to colour correct properly. This meant that I could alter
the colour, lighting and the overall mood of certain shots,
allowing me to convey certain ideas through atmosphere.
Another skill that I learnt was creating transitions, specifically
‘dip to white’ and ‘glitch’ transitions. These allowed to create
slick and smooth transitions between shots to help the video
flow better as well as look more aesthetically pleasing.

Upload screenshots of the editing

process and explain what they show.

This is the timeline for my whole production. There are lots of

layers because there are lots different masks, adjustment
layers and effects throughout the production.

These screenshots shows a mask that I have created around

an object in the video which I created by drawing around the
outline of the objects using the pen tool. I have used these
masks throughout the video to create transitions in which
people or objects in the video fly across the screen into their
positions in the next clip. These transitions are fun and
entertaining to watch.

This screenshot shows the different effects and overlays I have

added over clips in order to change them in certain ways. For
example, in this clip I have added a VHS effect over the video
in order to make it look old. I have also added zoom effects in
time with the base to make the video bolder and have a fast
tempo. I have added overlays like this throughout the video to
make the video more fun to watch and to have a consistent
psychedelic feel throughout it.

This screenshot shows how I changed the hue of certain parts

of the video. For example, in this clip, I changed the hue of
the flowers so that as the clip plays on they repeatedly
change colours. I also added a wave warp to the flowers so
that as the clip plays on they wave around. Both these effects
use key framing in order to make them change throughout
the video. These effects help to add to the trippy feel of the
video.

These screen shots show an example of some of the effects

that I have added to some of the clips in my production. This
example has had an emboss effect added to it. With all of
these clips with effects added to them, I have tweaked and
altered the properties of the effects in order to get the desired
effects that I want.

What issues did you have to One issue I encountered was that the document became
overcome whilst editing? How did you really laggy and wouldn’t let me play/preview certain parts of
move past them? the video back. To overcome this I had to render individual
parts of the project separately then re-add them to the
project. Another problem I encountered was the fact that
some of the masking I did was too complicated and ended
up just not looking right. I overcame this by simplifying it and
making it less complicated.

Have you identified any scenes which I do not need to re-shoot anything.
need re-shooting? Will you be able to
do this?

Are you on track this week? If not, I am on track for this week.
how far behind are you?

What work do you need to complete I do not need to complete work out of lessons.
outside of lessons to stay on track?

High Grade Tips

Evaluation & Reflection

● ‘reasoned decisions and inform the development of ideas’ – both your evaluation and the
weekly reflections above will clearly show both how and why your ideas developed throughout
the project
● ‘demonstrating clarity in thinking’ – all of the above plus very clear links between your research,
planning, idea development and the production of your poster and film trailer
