Week 9 Blog

This document provides guidance for weekly journal entries for a filmmaking project. It instructs students to reflect on what they have learned and how it has benefited their project, as well as areas for improvement. The guidance is adapted to each student's individual production schedule. Students are asked to address questions in the weeks they completed relevant tasks and provide 11 weekly blog entries, including during the Easter break. The sample entry reflects on editing the short film. Skills developed include color correction, transitions, parallel editing, and montage editing. Screenshots show masking transitions, color grading to convey emotion, and the overall project layout. Issues overcome include forgetting external files and background noise. No reshoots were needed and research remains incomplete.

WEEKLY JOURNALS

This is where you think about your FMP learning journey and development.
Don’t simply describe what you did - consider what you have learnt and how this has benefitted
your project. What do you need to improve?

THIS IS JUST GUIDANCE THAT YOU NEED TO ADAPT TO YOUR OWN PROJECT. YOU HAVE CREATED YOUR
OWN PRODUCTION SCHEDULES AND YOUR WEEKLY BLOGS SHOULD REFELCT THAT.

THESE QUESTIONS SHOULD BE ADDRESSED IN THE WEEKS YOU COMPLETED THEM. DO NOT JUST SUBMIT THIS
FORM FILLED IN FOR YOUR WEEKLY BLOGS. THERE SHOULD BE 11 WEEKLY BLOG ENTRIES (INCLUDING
EASTER).

Week Nine – Editing

EDITING

How did you find the editing process? I found the editing process good as I like editing but some of it
was a bit of a struggle as I used a professional intro which was
hard to make and used some nice transitions I learnt to do on
YouTube which was also very hard to do. I was able to do it
how I imagined it and I think I did well. I also had some trouble
editing at home as I forgot to put all of the sound effects and
music into the folder so when I tried to edit at home I had to
redo all of the sounds which took a long time.

What skills did you have to

learn/develop during the editing I learnt lots of new
process? skills whilst editing
such as colour
correction which
was useful to add
more depth to my
production. I also
learnt some nice
transitions that are
really good and
add to the
production making look a lot more professional. I also used a
cool intro that also made the short film look more professional.
Another skill I used was parallel editing which helped add
tension and looked interesting, I used this when Jay was
driving away from Jack once he killed him. Moreover, I used
montage editing which was a faced paced style of editing I
used this in the start where Jack was walking to school and
when Jack and Jay were becoming friends with each other.
I am now overall a better an editor as I can edited faster and
have lots of new techniques I can use that help to make my
productions better and more professional. I also learnt to be
more proactive and get editing done in a shorter amount of
time, and make the most of the time. I am now more
organised when editing and know how to start it off and get it
all done.

Upload screenshots of the editing

process and explain what they show.

This is a screen shot of the ending you can see where I have
put the Foley sounds of the gun shot and spaced out the clip
so there is a black screen when Jay shoots the gun. It also
shows where I have parallel edited and included the intense
music which helps build tension.

This is my whole production and you can see the whole layout
of the production and where I put all of the title cards and the
music. At the start you can see my professional intro I used
and how I edited all of the footage together. It is probably not
the most efficient way but it still worked well and I got It all
done making it look the best I could.

You can also see the start

middle and end music
which can be easily seen.
In this screen shot you can
see where I have used a
mask transition, I learnt this
as one of my techniques of
YouTube. It involves using a
clip where the whole
screen is covered and
wipes like walking past a camera, you then mask it out and
Put a clip underneath so
when the character walks
it slowly reveals the clip
underneath. I really like this
transition as it looks really
professional and nice,
however it is quite difficult
to produce.
As you can see in the next screen shot is my use of colour
grading, In this clip it is near the end where my character gets
shot so the colour is a lot more cold and dull. This is very
effective as you can see how the character feels and realise
what could happen by the colour before it happens.

In this screen shot it is near the middle of the short film where
they are becoming good friends and to show that they are
happy I colour graded it to warmer and more vibrant colours
to show this.

What issues did you have to I have overcome some issues whilst editing such as when I was
overcome whilst editing? How did you trying to edit at home I forgot to save the music and sound
move past them? effects to my memory stick so I had to redo all of that I also
had to change all of the font as I didn’t have the font I used
on my computer at home. I also had problems with
background noise but I was able to make it quieter so it
wasn’t too much of an inconvenience.

Have you identified any scenes which I didn’t need to re-shoot any of my footage so I am okay.
need re-shooting? Will you be able to
do this?

Are you on track this week? If not, No, I still need to finish some of the research.

High Grade Tips

Evaluation & Reflection

● ‘reasoned decisions and inform the development of ideas’ – both your evaluation and the
weekly reflections above will clearly show both how and why your ideas developed throughout
the project
● ‘demonstrating clarity in thinking’ – all of the above plus very clear links between your research,
planning, idea development and the production of your poster and film trailer
