Intra Class Correlation Icc

The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) is a measure of reliability and homogeneity within groups. It describes how strongly units in the same group resemble each other compared to units in different groups. The ICC ranges from 0 to 1, with values closer to 1 indicating greater homogeneity within groups. It is calculated as the ratio of variance between groups to the total variance. Higher ICC values near 1 mean ratings from the same group are highly similar, while lower values near 0 mean ratings are not similar. Software like SPSS can be used to compute ICC using different models depending on study design.

INTRA CLASS CORRELATION (ICC)

Maria Corazon B. Valdeavilla RN, MSN

PhD in Nursing, Our Lady of Fatima University
INTRA CLASS CORRELATION (ICC)

 is a form of inferential statistic that can be used

when quantitative measurements are made on units that
are organized into groups.

 It describes how strongly units in the same group

resemble each other. While it is viewed as a type
of correlation, unlike most other correlation measures it
operates on data structured as groups, rather than data
structured as paired observations.
Interclass vs Intraclass Correlation Coefficients:

Defining a class?
 Class of variables are those variables that share a:
metric (scale), and variance
Height and weight are different classes of variables.
There is only 1 Interclass correlation coefficient – Pearson’s r.
When one is interested in the relationship between variables
of a common class, one uses an Intraclass Correlation
Coefficient.
An intraclass correlation (ICC) can be a useful
estimate of inter-rater reliability on quantitative data
because it is highly flexible.
A Pearson correlation can be a valid estimator
of interrater reliability, but only when you have
meaningful pairings between two and only two raters.
INTRACLASS CORRELATION ( ICC)

 This is sometimes called intracluster correlation

coefficient and tells how similar in the same
group or cluster are.
 It provides a measure of homogeneity within
the clusters.
 It ranges from 0-1 with values closer to 1
indicating greater homogeneity.
INTRACLASS CORRELATION ( ICC)

 ICC close to 1 indicates high similarity

between values from the same group

 ICC close to 0 means that the values

from the same group are not similar.

with the ratings given. 2 1 3 3 2
Each women tests each 3 3 8 1 4
perfume once. 4 6 4 3 3
In here, we would like to 5 6 5 5 6
determine whether the 6 7 5 6 3

perfumes can be judged 7 8 7 7 9

reliably by different
women.
Calculating ICC is very complex by
hand.
Calculating ICC is usually done with
software and each program has its
own form.
INTRACLASS CORRELATION
COEFFICIENT

It is, as a general matter, the ratio of

two variances:

Variance due to rated subjects

ICC = --------------------------------------------------------------------
(Variance due to subjects + Variance due to Judges +
Residual Variance)

INTERPRETING RESULTS
Look in the INTRACLASS
CORRELATION COEFFICIENT
table, under the Intraclass
Correlation column.

The Single Measures value is used

when an individual rating is the level
of observation in the outcome.

The Average Measures value is used

when the average of several ratings is
the level of observation in the outcome.
INTRACLASS CORRELATION ( ICC)

 ICC close to 1 indicates high similarity

between values from the same group

 ICC close to 0 means that the values

from the same group are not similar.

ICC close to 1 indicates
high similarity between
values from the same
group
