Week 8 Blog

This weekly journal entry describes the student filming their dialogue and Foley recordings. They found the earlier planning and production schedule to be helpful for organizing the recording sessions. While recording dialogue in the radio booth went smoothly, recording outdoor Foley was disrupted by birds chirping. However, the student was able to overcome this issue by waiting for breaks in the chirping. After reviewing the recorded audio, the student feels it is of good quality and ready to be used in editing without needing reshoots.

THIS IS JUST GUIDANCE THAT YOU NEED TO ADAPT TO YOUR OWN PROJECT. YOU HAVE CREATED YOUR
OWN PRODUCTION SCHEDULES AND YOUR WEEKLY BLOGS SHOULD REFELCT THAT.

THESE QUESTIONS SHOULD BE ADDRESSED IN THE WEEKS YOU COMPLETED THEM. DO NOT JUST SUBMIT THIS
FORM FILLED IN FOR YOUR WEEKLY BLOGS. THERE SHOULD BE 11 WEEKLY BLOG ENTRIES (INCLUDING
EASTER).

Week Eight – Filming

FILMING

What practical work have you done This week was the week I came to record my dialogue and
this week - and how helpful was your Foley. Personally, I feel like the completed script was quite
earlier planning? helpful when we were recording the Foley in the radio booth
because my actors and I could record our lines without any
trouble which was good and we didn’t encounter any issues
whilst doing it the production schedule helped because I was
able to look at it and check which days I needed to record
dialogue on, and which days I needed to record my Foley
sounds on and the I found this quite helpful. In order for my
actors and I to record, I needed to fill out a form which then
allowed me to use the radio booth to record. This was helpful
because if I hadn’t booked the radio booth, we wouldn’t have
been able to record any dialogue on that day.

How will this be useful to you as your This is useful because that the dialogue and the Foley are
production process continues recorded and they are completed and as my production
continues, I will have time to edit because everything has been
recorded
Upload behind the scenes pictures
and videos and comment on what
they show

Jude Elliott (me) recording lines for the dialogue

In these images there is a clear demonstration of my actors and

I using the radio booth to record our dialogue. In the images
you can see the microphone we use to speak into which was
good quality and, in the image above, you can see the
software on the computer that we used to record the dialogue
and then later save the recorded dialogue to a usb stick. There
are examples of Joe, George and me using the green
microphone to record the dialogue. If you look at the computer
screen you will notice that the software is fairly easy to use which
was helpful when recording our individual audio pieces

What issues did you encounter whilst When we were in the studio, we didn’t encounter any problems
out filming and how did you whilst recording dialogue. However, I personally found issues
overcome them? whilst I was outside in the woods recording Foley because even
though the birds chirping was good for background noise for
the park scene the birds chirping became annoying when I
wanted to record some dripping water Foley because you
aren’t suppose to hear the chirping in the background of the
Foley sound. I overcame this by simply waiting for them to stop
making noise as sometimes they stopped which was helpful

How suitable do you feel your In terms of location I personally feel that the radio booth was
locations were for your filming? good because the equipment was good quality and the woods
that I recorded my Foley in was god because the birds chirping
sounded convincing enough to have in the background of a
scene.

How have you made use of the Yes,

technical skills you have developed so
far this year?

Having reviewed your footage, are After listening to the dialogue and Foley I have concluded that I
you happy with what you have won’t need to rerecord any of it, because any of the dialogue
captured and does anything need that was recorded was redone until it sounded convincing and
reshooting? the after listening to the Foley I have decided that it sounds
convincing and I will use as much of it as I can in my production
to make sure there is lots of good quality Foley sounds in my
production

Are you ready to edit? If not, how far I am ready to edit

behind are you?

What work do you need to complete I need to finish off some pre-production work
outside of lessons to stay on track?
