What are the underlying factors that affect scholar students in selecting Marinduque State
College as their preferred school; (2) How these factor does affects scholar students in selecting
Marinduque State College as their preferred school?
The study was conducted at the Marinduque State College Boac Campus. The
questionnaire was constructed and supplemented by an informal interview.
Findings show that the factors that affect scholar students in choosing
Marinduque State College as their preferred school are; quality education, college’s location,
availability of course, personal health, safety, campus security, and cost.
To further analyze the problem, it is recommended that:
1. Students

INTRODUCTION
Choosing a college is a massive undertaking with lots of different factors to
consider. Many students don't give the process enough time or thoughtful consideration. This can
make the selection process much more stressful and your eventual choice much more
miserable. But if you carefully weigh all of these factors, as well as some of your own, you will
eventually navigate your way through the process. Take it step by step. Start general and, as you
learn more about yourself and your range of options, get more and more specific. In the end,
what started out as hundreds of options will be narrowed down to just a few, and you will find a
great college for you.
Looking for the perfect college can be difficult, but you can simplify the process
by focusing on important goals for your college career. Instead of analyzing each of these
metrics for every college on your list, just pick the most important ones, based on your needs. It
will take some time and effort on your part, but in the end, you’ll know that you picked the best
college for you.
Choosing a school is a large choice and may without problems emerge as
overwhelming. There are many elements and variables that want to be taken into consideration
when making the choice. There are several essential variables to recollect while choosing a
school in college. Individuals regularly say that they think that it’s difficult to decide. Tragically

we as a whole need to settle on choices constantly, extending from insignificant issues like what
to have for lunch, straight up to groundbreaking choices like where and what to study, and who
to wed. A few people put off settling on choices by perpetually scanning for more data or getting
other individuals to offer their suggestions. Others turn to basic leadership by taking a vote,
putting a stick in a rundown or flipping a coin. Choices should be fit for being actualized,
regardless of whether on an individual or authoritative level. You do, thusly, should be focused
on the choice by and by, and have the capacity to convince others of its benefits.

Background of the Study
This paper aim at investigating the factors that affects scholar students in
choosing Marinduque State College as their preferred school. The researchers analyze these
factors to determine how and why they choose Marinduque state college as their preferred
school. Almost all State, universities and colleges have scholarships available for students to
apply for. You just need to know what they are, where you can find them, and how you can put
yourself forward for them. There are a number of things you can do to improve your chances of
gaining a scholarship. When applying for scholarships, you should make sure to include all the
documentation requested, and dedicate plenty of time to writing your application. In particular,
it’s important to clearly communicate your motivations for studying and how gaining a
scholarship will support your ambitions. Stay within the deadlines and, most importantly, show
the scholarship providers you have the potential to do great things. Scholarships can help you get
into a selective university. Universities prefer students who are distinguished and have been
recognized for an accomplishment. Winning a scholarship is a big deal! Most colleges are
looking to add students who will be positive contributors to their student body. A merit
scholarship confirms that you are a capable student who would be a great addition to the school.

Statement of the Problem
This study aimed to present the Factors affecting Scholar students in choosing
Marinduque State College as their preferred school.
Specifically. It seeks to answer the following:
1. What are the underlying factors that affect scholar students in selecting
Marinduque State College as their preferred school?
2. How these factor does affects scholar students in selecting Marinduque State
College as their preferred school?
Conceptual Framework
The focus of this study was undertaken by the following conceptual framework
shown in Figure 1 which has a three part process: the input, process and output.
Input - This include only the Underlying factor that affects scholar students in selecting
Marinduque State College as their preferred school
Process - In the research process, this includes interview and analysis of data
Output -This study would determine the Implications of these factors to scholar students
in selecting Marinduque Sate college as their preferred school

Theoretical framework
The study is anchored on the theory of Frank Parsons which focuses the idea of
matching careers to talents, skills and personality. Parsons states that occupational decision
making occurs when people have achieved:
1. An accurate understanding of their individual traits (aptitudes, interests, personal
abilities)
2. A knowledge of jobs and the labour market
3. Rational and objective judgement about the relationship between their individual traits,
and the labour market.
MARINDUQUE STATE COLLEGE

This three-part theory still governs most current practice.
The trait and factor theory operates under the premise that it is possible to measure both
individual talents and the attributes required in particular jobs. It also assumes that people may
be matched to an occupation that's a good fit. Parsons suggests that when individuals are in jobs
best suited to their abilities they perform best and their productivity is highest.
Scope and Limitation
This study focused only on the Factors affecting Scholar students in selecting
Marinduque State College as their preferred school. The respondents are limited only to the
seven (7) scholar students of Marinduque State College
Significance of the Study
The results of the study will be of great help to the following:
To the students, this will provide an overview on how scholar students choose
these as factors that affect upon choosing Marinduque State College as their preferred school
To the State, universities and colleges, this will provide insights on the nature of
the problems, so that solutions will be recommended to initiate new programs that assist students
in achieving their career goals.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
As this chapter presented literature and studies relevant to the study, it was worthy to note those
important points and details on the problems presented have been proper and in concise discussion. In
certain ways, the researchers had stressed some major focus on the relevance of the topic presented for
better judgment and enlightenment; readings included in this study were taken from the results of the
related studies articles, and journals.
Related Literature
Previous to 1970 little research was done at the college choice procedure and elements
that have an impact on the technique.A better exam of the process of college selection becomes necessary
to search for new methods to affect the system. (Chapman, 1981).
Foreign Studies
The study of Aguado C., Laguador J. & Deligero J.C. (2015) shows several factors may
be considered in selecting school and degree program like quality education, the people from the
environment, personal choice, and accessibility of the school from student’s residences.
Additionally, based on the article of Matt Mcfadden (March 2015) there are several
factors that research shows influence college choice for today students. Geography because of financial

constraints. Financial because of the availability of financial aid heavily influences college selection.
Parents and Peers, as much as kids don’t like to admit that their parents affect their decisions.
According to (Kotler, 1985), universities have seen the provision of higher education to
become a product and have been driven by competition to examine the quality of their services, to
redefine their product and to measure customer satisfaction in ways that are familiar to service marketing
specialists.
Foreign Literature
According to (Aly and Akpovi, 2001; Kanji et al., 1999) universities have realized that
their long-term survival depends on how good their services are and that quality sets one university apart
from the rest.
More specifically, this study’s objective is to establish and test dimensions for measuring
service quality in higher education. It also aims to measure and analyze the factors that determine the
quality, to what extent they meet the students’ expectations and if there are any differences of the
students’ perceptions about the weighting of the importance based on demographic factors. (Tsinidou
M., Gerogiannis V. and Fitsilis P., 2010)
SYNTHESIS RELEVANCE:
The choices that scholar students make regarding the school they want to go to in College
is to suffice their own thirst for knowledge. Likewise, the number of scholars can add to a higher

competency level of a particular school. In any case, students' satisfaction is measured when the school
meets their expectations.

Research Methodology
Research Design and Methodology
This research study uses Qualitative Research Design. The main characteristic of
qualitative research is that it is mostly appropriate for small samples, while its outcomes are not
measurable and quantifiable. Its basic advantage, which also constitutes its basic difference with
quantitative research, is that it offers a complete description and analysis of a research subject,
without limiting the scope of the research and the nature of participant’s responses (Collis &
Hussey, 2003). However, the effectiveness of qualitative research is heavily based on the skills
and abilities of researchers, while the outcomes may not be perceived as reliable, because they
mostly come from researcher’s personal judgments and interpretations. Because it is more
appropriate for small samples, it is also risky for the results of qualitative research to be
perceived as reflecting the opinions of a wider population (Bell, 2005).
Population and Sample
MARINDUQUE STATE COLLEGE
Laboratory School

Academic Track – General Academic Strand
Tanza, Boac, Marinduque
The target population for this research will came from Marinduque State College. The
sample of the population of this study stood out seven (7) scholar students from marinduque state
college. A stratified random sampling procedure was used for selecting the participants in this
study. This technique was employed to ensure a fairly equal representation of the variables for
the study.
Research Instrument
For the purposes of this research, in depth interviews were used. In depth
interviews are personal and unstructured interviews, whose aim is to identify participant’s
emotions, feelings, and opinions regarding a particular research subject. The main advantage of
personal interviews is that they involve personal and direct contact between interviewers and
interviewees, as well as eliminate non-response rates, but interviewers need to have developed
the necessary skills to successfully carry an interview (Fisher, 2005, Wilson, 2003). What is
more, unstructured interviews offer flexibility in terms of the flow of the interview, thereby
leaving room for the generation of conclusions that were not initially meant to be derived
regarding a research subject. However, there is the risk that the interview may deviate from the
pre-specified research aims and objectives (Gill & Johnson, 2002).
As far as data collection tools were concerned, the conduction of the research
involved the use of semi-structured questionnaire, which was used as an interview guide for the
researcher. Some certain questions were prepared, so as for the researcher to guide the interview
MARINDUQUE STATE COLLEGE
Laboratory School
Senior High School Program
Academic Track – General Academic Strand
Tanza, Boac, Marinduque
towards the satisfaction of research objectives, but additional questions were made encountered
during the interviews.
Validation of the questionnaire
The questionnaire designed for the study was subjected to a validation process for
face and content validity. Face and content validity have been defined by McBurney (1994:123)
as following:
1. Face validity is the idea that a test should appear superficially to test what it is supposed
to test; and
2. Content validity is the notion that a test should sample the range of behaviour represented
by the theoretical concept being tested.

A college’s location can really matter. If you want to intend to live at home
and commute to college you will want to attend a campus that is located nearby. It take
some time to consider how the college’s location will affect your education. Colleges in
big cities and “party towns” tend to have a lot of distractions that may affect your
academic performance. You should also take into account the crime and living cost
when considering where you want to attend college.
The types of major and degrees available is also a factor that the
participants consider in selecting Marinduque State College. A major is your primary
course of study while attending college because no matter how good the school, it will
not be the right one for you if it does not offer your prefer area of study or desired
degree level.
Personal health, safety and campus security are also a factor that affects
scholar students in selecting Marinduque State College as their preferred school,
because these days it really better to be safe than sorry. While many college campuses
appear safe, appearances can be deceiving. But over the years crime has increased, even
on college campuses. You might think of college as a safe and fun place, and it is. But
crime happens, and crime rates vary widely from school to school. Participant 1 answer
that personal health as a factor is that he have a confidential disease that need to take
into consideration that is why he choose a college that is located nearby when his
family can monitor his own condition.

Other factors maybe more important to you personally, but in the end, cost
may trump them all, even of having a scholarship grants because not all scholarship
grants that will offer to the students meet all the college expenses. Tuition is only about
half of the overall cost of attending college. Housing, food, transportation, books and
other cost-of-living expenses contribute to a much higher “sticker price.” Remember
Geographic Location? Hopefully you have given some thought not only to where you
would like to go, but where you can afford to go.
