Directions: Fill in the blanks with words and symbols that will best complete the statements
given below.
Suppose that the polynomial P(x) is divided by (x – r), as follows:
If P(x) is of degree n, then Q(x) is of degree _____. The remainder R is a constant because
____________________. Now supply the reasons for each statement in the following table.
STATEMENT REASON
1. P(x) = (x – r) . Q(x) + R Given polynomial P(x)
2 . P(r) = (r – r) . Q(r) + R
3. P(r) = (0) . Q(r) + R
4. P(r) = R
The previous activity shows the proof of the Remainder Theorem:
The Remainder Theorem
If the polynomial P(x) is divided by (x – r), the remainder R is a constant and is equal to
P(r).
R = P(r)
Thus, there are two ways to find the remainder when P(x) is divided by (x – r), that is:
1. Substitute r in the polynomial expression P(x), or
2. use synthetic division.
D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #1
Find the remainder when (5x2 – 2x + 1) is divided by (x + 2).
a. Using the Remainder Theorem:
P(x) = 5x2 – 2x + 1, r = –2
P(–2) = 5(–2)2 – 2(–2) + 1
P(–2) = 5(4) + 4 + 1
P(–2) = 20 + 4 + 1 = 25
Therefore, the remainder when P(x) = 5x2 – 2x + 1 is divided by x + 2 is 25
b. Using synthetic division:
-2 5 -2 1
-10 24
5 -12 25
Thus, the remainder is 25.
E. Discussing new concepts and practi
cing new skills #2
Find the remainder when P(x) = 2x4 + 5x3 + 2x2 – 7x -15 is divided by x – 3.
a. Using Remainder theorem
P(x) = 2x4 + 5x3 + 2x2 – 7x - 15, r = 3
P(3) = 2(3)4 + 5(3)3 + 2(3)2 – 7(3) -15
P(3) = 279
Therefore, the remainder when P(x) = 2x4 + 5x3 + 2x2 – 7x -15 is divided by x – 3 is 279
b. Using Synthetic Division

F. Developing mastery (Leads to Formative Assessment 3)
Group Activity:
Use the Remainder Theorem to find the remainder when the given polynomial is divided by each
binomial. Verify your answer using synthetic division.
1. (x4 – x3 + 2) ÷ (x + 2)
2. (x3 – 2x2 + x + 6) ÷ (x – 3)
3. (4x2 – 3x3 + x4 – 6x + 4) ÷ (x – 2)
4. (x4 – 16x3 + 18x2 – 128) ÷ (x + 2)
5. (3x2 + 5x3 – 8) ÷ (x – 4)
