JUVENILE DELINQUENCY AS A SOCIAL PROBLEM

MEANING OF JUVENILE DELINQUENCY:

DELINQUENCY:

Deviancy from expected role and behaviour.

JUVENILE DELINQUENCY:

When a child below age of 16 is deviated from expected role and behaviuor then he will be
called a juvenile delinquent.

DEFINITIONS OF JUVENILE DELINQUENCY:

1. A person who commit a crime and violate the state law below the age of 16 is called
juvenile delinquency.
2. A chil can be considered as delinquent who commits a crime like adult it include offences
like theft,robbery,rape and murder.
3. When a child violates state law or do offence or crime is called juvenile delinquency.

THEORIES OF JUVENILE DELINQUENCY:

1. BIOLOGICAL THEORY:

LAMBROSO and SHELDON stated that juvenile delinquency is a biological and physiological
phenomena those persons who are physically and biologically strong mostly these persons
commits deviancy.

2. PSYCHO-ANALYTIC THEORY:

SIGMUND FREUD argues that a delinquent chil has failed to develop ego and his personality
is id oriented.

3. SOCIOLOGICAL THEORY:
a. CULTURAL BASE:
MERTON says that delinquency is transmitted through culture to new generation.

b. SOCIALIZATION:

COHEN says that it is socialization phenomena it is learned by juvenile to cut his life
from social environment.

c. DIFFERENTIAL ASSOCIATION:

SUTHERLAND says that children become delinquent due to association with deviant
children in their social setup.

d. SOCIAL REACTION:

some sociologists believe that delinquency is a reaction to existing controlling agents.

CAUSES OF JUVENILE DELINQUENCY:

1. BROKEN FAMILY:

One of major causes of juvenile delinquency is broken families.The death of the father or
divorce or separation of parents or second marriage are responsible for juvenile
delinquency.

2. POVERTY AND INJUSTICE:

Poverty and injustice in society compell a child to become a juvenile delinquent.

3. DRUG ADDICT PARENTS:

Mostly drug addict parents are unaware about activities of their children and they hane
less to no control on their children so the children become juvenile delinquents.

4. IGNORANT AND ILLITERATE PARENTS:

Ignorant and illiterate parents are unaware about their children activities so their children
become juvenile delinquents.
5. SELFISH PARENTS:

The selfishness of parents towards their children and their expectations from their
children is also a reason of juvenile delinquency.

6. HEREDITY:

Some social scientists believe that juvenile delinquency is hereditary and some childrens
adopt it through transmission.

7. LAW LESSNESS:

Easy violation and flexibility of laws of a country also leads to juvenile delinquency.

8. MAXIMUM SIBLINGS:

If number of siblings are maximum and they are out of control then their will be more
possibilities of juvenile delinquency.

9. JOBLESSNESS OF PARENTS:

Due to joblessness of parents they are unable to fulfill the basic needs of their children so
due to this their children become juvenile delinquents.

10. CULTURAL PATTERN:

Bad and criminal cultural patterns of a society are also responsible for juvenile
delinquency.

11. SELF DOMINENCY:

Self dominancy in families, communities and societies also leads to juvenile delinquency.

12. HEALTH PROBLEMS TO PARENTS:

The ill parents have less to no control on their children so their children become juvenile
delinquents.
13. ASSOCIATION WITH BAD PEERS:

Mostly children become juvenile delinquent due to their association with delinquent and
bad peers.

14. PHYSICALLY STRONG AND FREE MINDED:

Mostly physically strong and free minded children easily become juvenile delinquents.

15. DEPRIVED FROM BASIC FACILITIES:

Children deprived from their basic facilities of life easily become juvenile delinquents.

16. IMITATION FROM SURROUNDING:

Children are imitating from surrounding if juvenile delinquency exists in surrounding


then children imitate it and become juvenile delinquents.

17. NO PROPER SOCIALIZATION:

No proper socialization of children by parents and family leads to juvenile delinquency.

18. NO CARE OF RELIGION/SECULARISM:

People are going away from their religion and becoming secular minded day by day then
there is more chances of juvenile delinquency.

19. MATERIALISTIC ATTITUDE:

People becoming materialistic day by day due to this type of attitude the ratio of juvenile
delinquency increases.

20. SELF SATISFACTION AND NO CARE OF CULTURAL


VALUES:

Self satisfaction, self centeredness and no care of cultural values also leads to juvenile
delinquency.
REMEDIES TO JUVENILE DELINQUENCY:

1. SETTLEMENT/ESTABLISHMENT OF PROPER FAMILY:

Settlement and establishment of different family issues can give a solution to juvenile
delinquency.

2. ALLEVIATION OF POVERTY AND EXISTENCE OF SOCIAL


JUSTICE:

If juvenile delinquency is due to poverty and injustice then alleviation of poverty and
existence of social justice will solve the problem of juvenile delinquency.

3. CONTROL OVER DRUG ADDICTION:

Mainly crimes are caused due to drug addiction so proper control over drug addiction can
automatically solve the issue of juvenile delinquency.

4. AWARENESS AND EDUCATION FOR PARENTS AND


CHILDREN:

Control over mass ignorence and high rate of illiteracy and creating awareness and
education for parents and children can solve problem of juvenile delinquency.

5. CONTROL OVER SELFISHNES:

Control over selfishness of parents towards their children can solve problem of juvenile
delinquency.

6. STRICT IMPLEMENTATION OF LAW:

The main solution to crimes and juvenile delinquency is strict implementation of law by
law enforcing agencies.

7. CONTROL OVER HIGH BIRTH RATE:


Controlling high birth rate through family planning is another solution to juvenile
delinquency.

8. CHANGE IN CULTURAL PATTERNS:

Replacing bad cultural patterns by good ones can also solve problem of juvenile
delinquency.

9. CHECK AND CONTROL OVER CHILDREN:

Proper check and control by parents on their children and giving enough time to their
children can overcome the threat of juvenile delinquency.

10.JOB OPPORTUNITIES TO PARENTS:

Due to unemployement parents are unable to provide and to satisfy the basic needs of
their children which results in juvenile delinquency so enough job opportunities can
overcome threat of juvenile delinquency.

11. PROPER HEALTH TREATMENT OF PARENTS:

Ill parents have less to no control on their children and they are unaware about activities
of their children which results in juvenile delinquency so giving proper treatment to
parents can overcome the threat.

12. PROTECTION OF CHILDREN FROM BAD COMPANY:

It is believed that children oftenly gets delinquency from their bad company/associations
and from their bad/delinquent peers so protecting them from bad/delinquent peers and
bad company/associations can be a solution to juvenile delinquency.

13. PROVISION OF BASIC FACILITIES:

Usually children become juvenile delinquents when their basic needs are not satisfied so
provision of basic needs and facilities can be a solution to juvenile delinquency.

14. STOPPING WRONG ACTIVITIES IN SURROUNDING:


Children imitates both good and bad things from surrounding so stopping bad activities in
surrounding is necessary to protect them from get imitated and become juvenile
delinquents.

15. PROPER SOCIALIZATION OF CHILDREN:

Proper socialization of children by their parents and family plays a vital role in solving
problem of juvenile delinquency.

16. REVIVAL OF RELIGIOUS VALUES:

Secularism is increasing day by day and humans are getting away from their religion so
revival of true religious values can solve this problem easily.

17. CHANGE IN MATERIALISTIC ATTITUDE:

People are becoming materialistic day by day which gives way to many crimes and
problems so change in this materialistic attitudes of people can be a solution to this
problem.

18. PRESERVATION OF GOOD CULTURAL VALUES:

Cutural values like caring, respecting, sharing, and protecting rights of citizens needed to
be preserved it will ultimately solve the problem of juvenile delinquency.
