Blended Learning Lesson Plan
Blended Learning Lesson Plan
Objectives:
Students will be able to have a number sense of 1-100 with the realization that numbers can be
counted by grouping
Students will be able to determine what a number place is
Students will be able to count up by 10s and 100s to get to as high as 1000
State Standards:
the tens digit represents the number of tens, and the ones digit represents the
number of ones;
decomposed as 5 hundreds, 2 tens and 4 ones or 4 hundreds, 12 tens, and 4 ones, etc.).
2.NSBT.2 Count by tens and hundreds to 1,000 starting with any number.
Context: In the second grade it is a large development tie where students begin to cope with
large numbers. It is standard for the students to continuously grow in the math aspect in order to
proceed onto the next grade and eventually will take on complex numbers needed in the future.
Previous to this lesson students were capable of counting up to as high as 100 counting off by
fives and tens to get to their sum. This now expands there learning from the hundreds in the
thousands and expands on grouping of numbers. All aspects of the lessons prior will be brought
into this next lesson but will be brought into a larger aspect of more numbers. The numbers and
grouping gets much larger and has the students mind increase in a mathematical aspect. After
this lesson, students will begin real world problems and will pair objects counting off in odds and
evens. Measuring will be taken into account and the use of counting numbers up to 1000 will be
applied to multiple lessons. In order to prepare these students for the next lesson it is important
for them to know how to decrease, increase, round and find place points for each numbers. This
will be the base for most upcoming lessons and the importance of keeping these students on track
with the numbers is very important.
Data: In today’s grouping, the students will be paired in groups based upon how well they did on
last week’s classwork sheet. This sheet was an assessment test to see how far the students have
developed and if they had any problems or not with this upcoming lesson. The students who
struggle the most with grouping will be placed at a table with objects and a work sheet of which I
will be monitoring. Those who have trouble with place numbers will be placed at the table with
counting blocks and marbles. Those who seem to be on track will be divided to each group in
order to help those who need it. There will then be a group of some individuals who will be
placed in a digital group where they will play an educational game and answer a few questions.
The data at the end will be collected through the work sheets provided in each group.
Materials:
Writing utensils will be needed for this grouping today
Class worksheets
Counting blocks
Marbles and Coins (for grouping)
Teacher Directed (10 minutes): This first group will begin with me doing a worksheet
along with a few other students as partners to help. The work sheet will consist of addition,
subtraction, grouping and place values so that the students can understand all the problems that
are being taught. There will only be ten questions on the work sheet and I will be there to provide
as much help as I can. Once a question is finished by an individual student I will then check the
answer and asked how they did it to see if they did it correctly and to keep them on the right
path. There will be objects at the table such as marbles that will be available to the students and
counting blocks in order to help them with the worksheet as well. This worksheet provides the
basics to the lesson of which will hopefully have the students understand fully what is being
done. I will be guiding the students so that they can cope and fully comprehend what is needed in
order to move on. Once the students finish I will collect the worksheets and see how they did
compared to the worksheet that was provided last class to see if there had been any improvement
and if there hasn’t then it is clear that more work needs to be done and homework will be
provided.
Collaborative (10 minutes): In this group, students will be set at a table which is provided
with marbles and counting blocks. This group consists of both students who excelled on the last
worksheet and those who struggled so that each student can help one another. There will be a
class ipads set at the table for them to follow along with video given to help them if they need it
such as (https://youtu.be/QS32l5WhSuY). This way if the student is having a difficult time they
are capable of watching someone else do it in the video to hopefully get a better understanding.
There will be a worksheet also provided at this table where the students are asked to answer 10
questions. 5 questions will be grouping objects such as the marbles and the other 5 will be
finding place values using the counting blocks to help give them a visual. When the answers are
figured out with the grouping they will need to be recorded and draw onto the worksheet. Along
with the place values when the answer is found it will only need to be recorded with the answer
as there is not much to draw.
Independent Digital (10 minutes): In this group there will be ipads also provided where
the students will play an educational app with games and its called Second Grade learning where
there is a second on math with counting and place values that can help benefit the students while
also having fun. (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/second-grade-learning-
games/id1080157899?mt=12 ) Once the students finish one of the activities they will need to
come up to me and show me the completion. This will show the kids real world problems for the
future and will encourage them hopefully to play more educational games at home.
Closure (15 minutes): When the groups are finished, they will all be called back to their
assigned seats with their completed work sheets. I will review the lesson one last time asking a
few questions. If any students have questions, they are free to ask and I will also ask how they
enjoyed this lesson. What is important is if the students found this helpful so that I can do it
again to benefit the children. When it is time to leave class I will be collecting all of the
worksheets and seeing how each student did to see whether this worked or not and if not then
there will be homework handed out next class to have the parents hopefully help them even
further.
Rationale:
“ Place Values” (https://youtu.be/a4FXl4zb3E4): This video will be an refresher for the
students to review before beginning their group work. Place value is the most recent thing
the students have learning and the video should remind them to how to do it. This teaches
the students place values from ones, tens and hundreds for just the basics of values. The
students will follow along with the videos answering the questions that are asked and
attracting their attention hopefully with the playful designs of the video. This supports
student learning by teaching the students the basics of what is being taught in the
classroom from the core curriculum which they will need to know. I found the video to
be helpful as this should appeal to the eyes of a second grader and help them stay focused
while watching. The high quality of this video and the educational values made me chose
this to display to the class so that hopefully they would better understand. The video goes
over the problems nice and slow to ensure compete closure on the problem to help. This
video, overall will refresh the memory of the students before beginning the worksheets
revolving around it. With its catchy background music and the real world problems this
video helps express the standards the students need to learn and it better than standard
book work.
