IGCSE SPANISH

WRITING PAPER

Communication 10/10, verbs 8/8, linguistic features 12/12

● Read bullet point and write next to it the tense (present, preterite, etc), to ensure you use
the correct tense!
● Cover points in order
● Develop each bullet point in a different paragraph.
● Use the language provided in the questions to check gender, agreement.
● Stick more or less to the number of words 130-140 (max 160 words…)
● Communication: cover each point in order and as clearly as possible. To get 2/2 per point
(total 10), you need to have a clear sentence answering the point in the correct tense.
● Verbs: count the verbs that you have used to ensure you have varied them enough. Make
sure they are accurate.
● Linguistic features: negatives, adverbs, adjectives, linking words, time phrases, etc..

Varying verbs for IGCSE Spanish

1. Learn a list of common verbs you know how to conjugate in different tenses.

2. Use different personal pronouns: yo, nosotros, ellos, etc.

3. Use different tenses. Each time to change tense use a different time expression.

4. Use different expressions of opinion: creo que…, pienso que…, considero que…, me
parece que..., etc

5. Use expressions requiring an infinitive:

a. Me gusta comer chocolate
b. Me gustaría cambiar de curso
c. Deseo jugar al rugby y al tenis
d. He decidido hacer más deporte
e. Necesito comer más sano
f. Es importante comer menos comida basura
If the expression requires a preposition, the preposition must be correct for the
infinitive to get a tick.

6. Use particular verbal expressions:

a. Después de / Antes de + INFINITIVO e.g. Antes de hacer last areas de casa, hago
los deberes. Before doing house chores, I do my prep
b. Acabar de + infinitive e.g. Acabo de lavar los platos – I have just done the washing
up.

You should aim first of all for simple sentence structure: subject + verb both need to be
correct for the verb to score a tick. If you can do points 1, 2 and 3 correctly you can score
maximum ticks for verbs.

If you include examples of 4, 5 and 6 you will also score well on the linguistic feature scale.
