WHAT IS A STATEMENT OF PURPOSE?

A
statement of purpose (SOP) is an essay that you send along with your application
to various schools. These essays help the admission committee know the student
beyond her academic capabilities. In an SOP, the student is, basically, required to
talk about what are the driving forces behind her decision to pursue the course; in this case
Computer Science. One thing to keep in mind while writing a Statement of Purpose for
Computer Science is that the admission committee prefers essays that are well thought of
and reflect what is important to the aspirant.

I
have always been fascinated by computers and having known the utilization of information
technology across various industries I undertook Computer Science in my under gradu-
ation. In the four years that I studied Computation and Computer Programming my inter-
est in the field has only increased manifold. I have, hence, decided to continue my journey
in the field by enhancing my knowledge through an MS degree in Computer Science from
your University.

Besides learning theoretical knowledge in C++, Java and PLSQL programming, I have
been involved in laboratory activities to gain practical insights into the field. In fact, I have
always taken great joy in writing and executing programmes and take pride in my sense
of competition regarding the same. Further, I took my programming knowledge out of the
laboratory by taking part in technology quizzes and national wide technical symposiums.
My achievements in such events led me to further my practical base in Computer Science.
MS being a research oriented programme, I believe it would only help in enhancing my
practical knowledge in the field.

In addition to my B.Tech programme, I have also completed some complementary courses


like Oracle Certified Java Professional (OCJP) and J2SE (JDBC-Java Database Connectivity
to support my degree. My academic experience has thus provided me with a wide range
of practical skills that will be immensely useful and when studying overseas at the graduate
level.

In addition to my academic achievements, I have been very active outside the classroom
and have participated in many extracurricular activities including debates and sports. In fact,
being a religious follower of cricket, I am an active member of the community cricket team
and have played in many club matches.

But, sport is just a part of the activities I participate in. I have been volunteering for my
community drives for a long time. In fact, I came up with an idea to transfer food to the
homeless people around the locality from the local restaurants, thereby, eliminating food
wastage at these places.

In conclusion, I believe a graduate programme in Computer Science from your university


will be major step towards achieving my academic objectives. The process of learning is
continuous and I wanted to explore the variety of computing minds at a global campus that
is yours.
