Electric Shop

The document discusses an electrical shop, including safety measures, tools, and equipment used. An electrical shop performs electric jobs like making extension boards, wiring, and fixing switchboards. Safety gear like gloves and shoes are required when handling live wires. Tools in the shop include pliers, screwdrivers, hammers, knives, testers, tapes, and multi-meters for tasks like cutting, bending, and measuring wires.

ASSIGNMENT NO: 04

TOPIC: ELECTRICAL SHOP

SUBMITTED TO:
SIR Dr. SYED AMJAD AHMED

SUBMITTED BY: ASAD ULLAH JAMALI

ROLL NO: 18-MCE-32

INSTITUTE NAME: NFC-IEFR FAISALABAD

DEPARTMENT NAME: MECHANICAL
ELECTRICAL SHOP
DEFINITION:
A shop where different electric jobs are done which deals with making of
extension board/casing and capping of wires and cables, fixing of faulty switch
boards etc. is known as electrical shop, it also deals with different electrical tools
and equipments.

SAFETY MEASUREMENTS IN ELECTRIC SHOP:

 Always wear safety gear (Rubber/Insulated: Gloves, Shoes etc.) when
handling live wire.

 Check for damage on power plugs, wire and other electrical fittings. If found
damaged, repair or replace damaged equipment immediately.

 Keep electrical wires of equipment away from hot surfaces to prevent

damage of the insulation.
 Do not lay electric wires along passage. Further sharp edges can cause
damage to insulation leading to short circuit.
 Know the location of switches/circuit breaker boxes for use in case of an
emergency.
 All circuit breakers in the switch board must be clearly labeled for easy
identification.
 Access to circuit breakers must not be blocked.

 Extension cords must be used only to supply power temporarily.

 Do not handle electrical equipment when hands, feet or body are wet or
perspiring, or when standing on a wet floor.
 Whenever possible, use only one hand when working on circuits or control
devices.
 Do not wear rings, metallic watchbands, chains etc. when working with
electrical equipment.
ELECTRICAL TOOLS AND EQUIPMENTS:
In electrical shop different tools are needed for performing electric jobs. There are
following tools are used in electric shop:

 Pliers
 Screw driver
 Hammer
 Cutter knife
 Tester
 Measuring Tape
 Digital Multi meter
 Electrical Cables

PLIERS:

It is also known as linesman pliers used in electrical shop for gripping, twisting,
bending and cutting wire and cables. There are following types of pliers used in
electrical shop:

 SIDE CUTER PLIERS:

It is also known as Diagonal pliers or wire cutters intended only for the
cutting of wires.

 NEEDLE NOSE PLIERS:

Some models have a cutting tool at the tip, especially for cutting wires and
electrical work. Although they're commonly used to cut and bend small
wires and electrical wiring, needle-nose pliers have other uses, as well. They
can bend, cut and grip where fingers and other tools are too big or clumsy.
 COMBINATION PLIER:
Combination pliers are multi-purpose pliers, combining gripping jaws
with wire cutters. They can be used for gripping, compressing, bending,
twisting, extracting and cutting various wires.

SCREW DRIVER:

A screwdriver is a tool, manual or powered, for screwing and unscrewing

(inserting and removing) screws. There are following types of screw driver used in
electrical shop:

 FLAT EDGE SCREW DRIVER:

The tool used to drive a slotted screw head is called a standard, common
blade flat-edge screw driver.

 PHILLIPS OR FOUR EDGE SCREW DRIVER:

A screwdriver is a tool, manual or powered, for screwing and unscrewing
(inserting and removing) 4-edge headed screws.
HAMMER:

A hammer is a tool used to drive nails into wood, to shape metal (as with a forge),
or to crush rock. Hammers are used for a wide range of driving, shaping, and
breaking applications.

CUTTER KNIFE:

The present invention relates generally to a cutting instrument for use in electric
wire distributing work, and more particularly to such a sheath type electrician's
knife that is mainly usable for stripping insulation from electric wires and cables
or cutting them.

TESTER:

The tip of the tester is touched to the conductor being tested (for instance, it can be
used on a wire in a switch, or inserted into a hole of an electric socket). A neon
lamp takes very little current to light, and thus can use the user's body
capacitance to earth ground to complete the circuit.
MEASURING TAPE:

A tape measure or measuring tape is a flexible ruler and used to measure distance
and to measure length of electrical wires and cables. It consists of a ribbon of cloth,
plastic, fiber glass, or metal strip with linear-measurement markings. It is a
common measuring tool used in electric shop.

DIGITAL MULTI METER:

A digital multimeter (DMM) is a test tool used to measure two or more electrical
values principally voltage (volts), current (amps) and resistance (ohms). It is a
standard diagnostic tool for technicians in the electrical/electronic industries.

ELECTRICAL WIRES & CABLES:

Electrical wiring is an electrical installation of cabling and associated devices such

as switches, distribution boards, sockets and light fittings in a structure. Wiring is
subject to safety standards for design and installation
