| he's the richest woman in Britain, and the world's top-selling author. Every year 4 nearly a million trees are cut down to print her books. But now J. K. Rowling | has made a promise — to have the next Harry Potter book printed on recycied paper. Other famous British authors have also made a similar promise to save the environment. i Although recycled paper is often used to make newspapers, until recently it wasn't strong enough to use in books. But now researchers in Canada have found a new way of recycling paper, such as waste paper from offices, to make books. Paper made by this technique costs only three per cent more to produce than normal paper, and uses less energy. The Canadian edition of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was printed using the technique - and saved about 40,000 trees The environmental organization Greenpeace welcomed the news. They said that many British publishers say they use environment-friendly paper in their books but they usually don’t know where the paper comes from. Often it comes from the world’s ancient forests, in Canada, Finland, and Russia. In a message to Canadian readers, Ms Rowling said that the forest in her books is home to magical creatures like unicorns and centaurs. Because the Canadian editions are printed on Ancient Forest Friendly paper, the Harry Potter books are helping to save magnificent forests in the real world. She thinks it is a good idea | to respect ancient trees ‘manent nem teint tne enn inant inshe trmnn mnt mnt J] Read the text.
