07 Classroom Blog Lesson Idea Template

This document describes a lesson plan that uses a classroom blog and website creation tools. The lesson introduces students to the Trail of Tears through a flipped classroom model. Students will listen to an audio file and watch a BrainPOP video on the topic over the weekend. They will then create a mind map using BrainPOP tools and have the option to upload it to the classroom's password protected blog. The blog allows students to learn at home and provides curriculum resources. Internet safety is a top priority, with only first names or pseudonyms allowed on the blog uploads. The teacher believes this flipped model will positively impact learning by giving students background knowledge before class discussion.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: Students have the ability to complete this assignment anywhere they want and on any device
that they want. They can relax at home while still learning new materials that are presented on the classroom
blog. Students will also be able to hear their teacher’s voice while at home, which isn’t something they get to
do very often.
Representation: The Flipped Classroom model is very helpful for students. English language learners can hear
the audio file while following along with the transcript. Students who need to hear information multiple times
or have auditory processing disabilities would also benefit from being able to replay the audio file as many
times as they need to.
Action and Expression: Students will be actively participating with the Flipped Classroom page on the
classroom blog and completing their assignments the way that they want to. They’re also able to interact with
other pages on the blog as well as find links to websites that host a plethora of academic information.

Lesson idea implementation:

This Flipped Classroom assignment will be introduced with the teacher telling their students on a Friday that
there is an assignment on the classroom blog for them to complete over the weekend. Students will review
the Flipped Classroom page on the classroom blog and listen to the provided audio file. After listening to the
audio file students will follow a link to a BrainPOP video on the Trail of Tears. Students will then be asked to
watch the video, take the quiz, and create a mind map using the tools provided within BrainPOP. These
activities will serve as an introduction to a lesson teaching the students about the Trail of Tears.
The students will also be asked to upload a copy of their mind maps to the classroom blog with their parent’s
permission. The students will do this on a page that is password protected and only attach their first names.
If their parents don’t want them to upload anything to the classroom blog, or they are unable to for any

reason, students can bring a copy of their mind map to class on Monday. The Flipped Classroom assignments
will be graded for completion. The teacher will provide feedback on the mind maps either in class or on the
classroom blog.

Importance of technology:
Using a website-creation tool is essential for setting up a classroom blog. The classroom blog gives students
the change to learn at their own pace in their own home. It is also a resource for students that can be filled
with information, curriculum updates, reminders, assignments, helpful websites, and much more. Flipped
Classroom assignments provide the opportunity for students to explore a number of websites and topics that
the teacher has chosen.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

Whenever young students are on the internet there are safety concern. When utilizing a classroom blog, it is
important for teachers to keep the safety of their students in mind at all times. And posts created on my
classroom blog must be approved by me before they publicly appear on the website. Students will only be
able to upload work on a password protected page and they can only use their first name lass initial or a
pseudonym that I already know. Uploading to the blog will never be required for students to receive a grade
so that students whose parents don’t want them to upload anything won’t be penalized. Following internet
safety laws and guidelines is of the top most priority when students are asked to do anything online.

Reflective Practice:
I feel that this Flipped Classroom activity will positively impact students learning. The students will become
familiarized with the topic over the weekend and therefor come into class on Monday with a beginning
knowledge base on the topic. This will make the lesson presented in class more meaningful for the students
and it will also give the teacher and class as a whole the opportunity to expand the lesson to include more
information than just what the students were able to learn over the weekend. This lesson idea would also
benefit from using the website Bubble.us instead of simply using the mind map tool within BrainPOP.
