Signals&Systems Lab 9

The document discusses properties of discrete time signals in the frequency domain. It provides an example of plotting the real and imaginary parts, magnitude, and phase spectrum of a discrete time Fourier transform (DTFT). It also contains tasks to determine the DTFT of a given system and verify properties of the Fourier transform, including linearity and inverting, by comparing the left and right sides.

9 Properties of Discrete Time Signals In Frequency Domain

9.1 PLOT real and imaginary parts of system using coefficients

Example #1: Evaluate the DTFT of the given coefficients.

num = [2 1]

den = [1 –0.6]

 Plot real and imaginary parts of Fourier spectrum.

 Also plot the magnitude and phase spectrum.

MATLAB CODE:

% Evaluation of the DTFT

clc;
% Compute the frequency samples of the DTFT
w = -4*pi : 8*pi/511 : 4*pi;
num = [2 1];
den = [1 -0.6];
h = freqz(num, den, w);
% Plot the DTFT
subplot(2,2,1)
plot(w/pi,real(h));
grid on;
title('Real part of H(e^{j\omega})')
xlabel('\omega /\pi');
ylabel('Amplitude');
subplot(2,2,2)
plot(w/pi,imag(h));
grid on;
title('Imaginary part of H(e^{j\omega})')
xlabel('\omega /\pi');
ylabel('Amplitude');

subplot(2,2,3)
plot(w/pi,abs(h));
grid on;
title('Magnitude Spectrum |H(e^{j\omega})|')
xlabel('\omega /\pi');
ylabel('Amplitude');
subplot(2,2,4)
plot(w/pi,angle(h));
grid on;
title('Phase Spectrum arg[H(e^{j\omega})]')
xlabel('\omega /\pi');
ylabel('Phase, radians');

Task 1: Determine H(w) and plot its magnitude and phase for the following system.
Y(n) = 2x(n) + x(n-1) – 0.25y(n-1) + 0.25y(n-2)

Task 2: Verifying Fourier transform properties

To verify following Fourier transform properties:

Take n = [-100:100]
And x = x = exp(j*pi*0.2*n)
And y = cos(pi*0.4*n)

Verify the following properties

(Method : Compute the LHS and take its Fourier Transform. Compute the RHS. Compare the two:
both results should be equal. )

 Linearity: a . x[n] + b . y[n]  a. X + b.Y

 Inverting: x[-n]  X(exp(-jw))
