 Important SPI Glossary
Instrument: Any physical device in the field. This device may or may not be wired to the PLC.

Device: An instrument with the addition of the relays, sockets, or anything that requires wiring.

Device Panel: SPI refers to the device panel as the terminations and terminal blocks on instruments for wiring.

Loop: Collection of instruments under a unique number. This maybe a closed or open loop. Any instrument should
have a loop.

Soft Tag: Any tag related to an instrument that does not require wiring, such as tags on HMI, PLC, DCS, etc.

Control System Tag: All the instruments that require wiring and will be connected to PLC I/O Cards.

Specification: SPI refers to Instrument Data Sheets as Specifications.

Admin: A person who can set up the SPI based on the project requirements and specify the
general structure of the project upon which all the other team will work on. This person
should be very experienced with SPI.

Process Engineer: A member of the Process department who will provide process data for
specifications, and lists the line lists into the database.

Instrument Engineer: A member of Instrumentation team who will complete the

instrumentation section on SPI as well as performing calculations for instrument
specifications and perform wiring activities.
