Blogs 15 min

Blogs are online diaries. They allow you to frequently update articles and allow your visitors to post
their own comments on your blog.

By the end of this tutorial you will be able to:

 Create a new blog Smart object and add it to a page.

 Manage your blog and articles.

To download the tutorial project file(s), right-click the link(s) and, depending on your
browser, select either Save Target As...or Save Link As... In the subsequent dialog, ensure
that you choose a suitable file location, such as a 'downloads' folder or the 'desktop', so that
you can easily browse to your file when required.

Let’s begin...

1. On the Standard toolbar, click Open.

2. Navigate to the portfolio.wpp file, select it and click Open.

The 'Home' page is displayed in the workspace.

3. On the Site tab, double-click the Blog page entry. The page opens in the workspace.

4. Select the "under construction" image and press the Delete key.

Save now! Click File > Save As... and choose a new name for your file.

 This tutorial assumes that you have already registered for a Serif Web Resources account as you
will need to log in to access the Smart objects. If you are unsure how to do this, see the
tutorial Serif Web Resources or see WebPlus Help.
Creating a blog

Over the next few steps, we'll add a blog.

To create a blog:

1. On the Quick Build tab, in the External/Managed Content category, drag the Blog item to the
page.

The Create Smart Object dialog opens.

2. In the dialog, in the Style pane on the right:


o Type a name for the blog.

o Adjust the appearance of the blog text (text colour, font style
border colour and thickness. We set our text colour to white
current scheme.

o Optional: If you don't want other people to be able to embe


their site, fill in the Filter Offsite option with your website U
highlight). Otherwise, leave this blank.

o Select your time zone from the drop-down list.

3. Finally, we need to set the overall visual style and information that will appear on the blog
and individual posts:
o Set the Visual Style to Blog Clouds (red highlight).

o Optional: Complete the information for Description, Blogger Name and Blogger
Description. If you want this to display in your blog, you'll also need to select the Profile Info
check box (blue highlight).

4. When you are happy with your blog settings, click Save.

The blog is added to the page (and is also saved to your Serif Web Resources Smart Objects
Library).

3. Advanced blog options

For information on the advanced blog options, click the Help button on the dialog.

 If your Smart objects do not preview on the page, you can turn previews on.

To turn Smart object previews on:

1. Click Tools, then Options.


2. In the Options dialog, expand the Layout category. In the Layout sub-category, select
the Preview Hosted Objects check box and click OK.

Don't forget to save your work!

 You can also add your blog as on offsite link. For more information on creating offsite links,
see WebPlus Help.

Managing blogs

You'll want to manage your blog smart object on a regular basis if you want to keep everyone up-to-
date with the latest news. It's worth noting that most Smart objects are managed in a similar way.

To manage a blog Smart object:

1. If necessary, in the Insert menu, click Smart Object and log in.

2. In the Smart Objects Library, select the blog then in the Object Preview pane
click Manage.

To create a new blog article:

1. In the Manage dialog, click New.

2. Type your article title in the Article Title box.

3. Type your article content in the main window. To format the text, use the toolbar controls.

4. If you want your blog to receive trackbacks, posting references from other blog sites as a
comment on the referenced article, select the Allow Trackbacks check box.

5. To categorize your article and allow blog users to search for similar articles of interest, type tag
keywords into the Tags box. (For a list of suggested tags, click the suggest link.)

6. Click Save to add the new article and return to the Manage Blog dialog. (You'll see your new
article listed.)

To edit an existing article:

 Select the article and click Edit. Make your changes and click Save.

To delete an existing article:

 Select the article and click Delete.


To edit article comments:

 Select the article and click Comments. You can delete selected comments for an article, or clear
all comments.

 WebPlus lets you control who is permitted to post comments to your blog articles. For example, you
can:

• Prevent spam by using a CAPTCHA control.

• Restrict access by granting access to specific user groups.

Manage your blog from anywhere!

If you are regularly updating your blog, it's worth knowing that you don't need your copy of
WebPlus open in front of you to do it! All you need is a computer with access to the internet.

To manage your blog online, go to www.serifwebresouces.com and log in. From the Smart Objects
Library, you can add and edit articles in the same way as you would from the program
(see Managing blogs).

Well, that concludes this project. Why not experiment with the other available Smart objects?
