Mec 291: Dynamics and Materials LAB Mechanism and Machine Elements

This document describes 3 experiments to be conducted in a dynamics and materials lab course: 1) A crank and slider mechanism experiment to measure displacement, velocity, and acceleration of a piston at different crank radii. 2) A flywheel experiment to determine the moment of inertia of a flywheel by measuring the time taken for different loads to rotate the flywheel through a fixed angle. 3) A wheel and axle experiment to compare the mechanical advantage of different diameter lifting pulleys by measuring loads lifted. Tables are provided to record data for each experiment. Students are instructed to prepare tables and review experiment procedures before the lab.

APPLICATION
CRANK AND SLIDER MECHANISM

Engine Piston

OBJECTIVE: to obtain max displacement, velocity and acceleration

of a crank slider mechanism
REFER CHAPTER 16 : PLANAR KINETICS OF A RIGID BODY

From page 311

THEORY
The piston displacement is given by;
x= r ( 1 - cos θ ) + I ( sin2 θ) / ( 2N2 )

Where r is the crank radius

I is the length of the link
N is the ratio of the link to the crank radius

The piston velocity is given by;

v = ω r [(sin θ + (sin 2θ)/2N)]

The piston acceleration is as follows;

a = ω2 r [(cos θ + (cos 2θ)/2N)]
