III. READING

Directions: Answer the following in complete sentences if needed. Choose the

letter of the best answer in multiple choice questions.

When we think of cave dwellers, we often think of people carrying clubs

and dressed in coarse, shaggy, rugged animal skins. We hardly think of them as
having been fond of flowers.

Some scientists think they were. In 1972, scientists investigated a

prehistoric grave. They found the remains of a person who had apparently been
buried in the floor of the cave, on a bed of flowers.

Arlette Goushau, a French scientist, found the pollen of eight kinds of

wildflowers taken form the grave. The flowers seem to be related to the
wildflowers then growing around the grave.

Maybe cave dwellers were more civilized than we once thought! (65)

3. What is Arlette Goushau’s nationality?

4. What did Arlette Goushau find in the prehistoric grave?

Many attractive barns can be seen in the United States. This is especially
true in the New England states and alongside the Atlantic coast. Red is one of
the popular colors for these barns. Have you ever wondered why?

Our first settlers started using red paint, especially on barns. It was not
difficult to make and was not expensive. Red paint also lasted a long time and
looked attractive.

The colonists made their paint from red clay, oil from the menhaden fish,
and milk. All these materials were easy to get. It was only natural that most
barns were painted red. (35)

7. According to the story, what color is mostly used for barns?

8-9. In what two major places in the United States are these barns often seen?

10-11. Why is this color often used for painting barns?

Today, we have many kinds of shoes. We have slippers, sneakers and

sandals. There are shoes for bowling, boating, and basketball. There are shoes
with high heels, low heels and medium heels.

Shoes in olden times were not all the same either. In ancient Egypt, the
servants wore sandals. The rich people wore shoes with toes that looked like
curled elephant’s trunk. In Europe, the toes of some shoes are particularly long.

The shoes of knights were the most interesting. Made of iron, the long toes
pointed downward so the knights’ feet would not slip out of their stirrups. The
only problem was the knights couldn’t walk with them!

How shoe styles have changed! (117)

weather, attacks by outlaws, and dangerous trails. They would ride Indian ponies

You may have seen an ice skater cut an ‘8’ figure in the ice. Some bees can
do this too. No, they don’t ice-skate, but they do form the figure eight when they
“dance”. Some honeybees do this to let other honeybees know where there is
food.

A scout bee who has found food in the field returns home to the hive. It
tries to attract the attention of other honeybees. This bee makes series of loops
and straight runs. The middle line of the figure eight shows the direction and
