Many attractive barns can be seen in the United States. This is especially
true in the New England states and alongside the Atlantic coast. Red is one of
the popular colors for these barns. Have you ever wondered why?
Our first settlers started using red paint, especially on barns. It was not
difficult to make and was not expensive. Red paint also lasted a long time and
looked attractive.
The colonists made their paint from red clay, oil from the menhaden fish,
and milk. All these materials were easy to get. It was only natural that most
barns were painted red. (35)
8-9. In what two major places in the United States are these barns often seen?
13-15. What are the three main things needed to make the paint?

Shoes in olden times were not all the same either. In ancient Egypt, the
servants wore sandals. The rich people wore shoes with toes that looked like
curled elephant’s trunk. In Europe, the toes of some shoes are particularly long.
The shoes of knights were the most interesting. Made of iron, the long toes
pointed downward so the knights’ feet would not slip out of their stirrups. The
only problem was the knights couldn’t walk with them!
16-18. Give different kinds of footwear aside from what is mentioned in the
story.
20-21. Differentiate the footwear of rich people and slaves in ancient Egypt.

The pony express lasted for only eighteen months. Still, it is a famous
chapter in American history. It is famous because of the daring and bravery of its
riders.
The Pony Express was started to give faster mail service. The riders were
each given a gun, a knife, and a Bible. With only these, they had to brave bad
weather, attacks by outlaws, and dangerous trails. They would ride Indian ponies
as fast as they could for fifteen miles. Then they would jump off with the mail
sack, mount another pony, and be riding again in less than two minutes.
Only the bravest and the best riders could work for the Pony Express. (43)
29-30. Give two things that the riders carry during their travel.

You may have seen an ice skater cut an ‘8’ figure in the ice. Some bees can
do this too. No, they don’t ice-skate, but they do form the figure eight when they
“dance”. Some honeybees do this to let other honeybees know where there is
food.
A scout bee who has found food in the field returns home to the hive. It
tries to attract the attention of other honeybees. This bee makes series of loops
and straight runs. The middle line of the figure eight shows the direction and
distance of the source of food. The line is invisible. The angle of the bee’s body
and the speed which the bee moves actually signal the information. The worker
bees then hurry off to bring back the food. (59)

Phillis Wheatly was born in Africa and sold into slavery in Boston,
massachusettes, in 1761. Her owners, the Wheatlys, educated her in literature
and Latin.
Phillis was a brilliant student who mastered her subjects and enjoyed
writing poetry. She traveled to England, where she became very popular. In
1773, a book of her poems was published in London.
Phillis wrote a poem for General George Washington in 1775. She was the
first person to use the phrase “first in peace” to describe him. Phillis Wheatly’s
talent and fame helped to spread antislavery opinion in the United States. (93)

At one time there were redwood trees covering over two million acres.
Then they began to be destroyed by wind, lightning, floods and by people
cutting them down. This caused the government to make the area a national
park. This means that no one can cut down the redwoods. There are also forest
rangers in the park to care for them. The national park is 500 miles long.
Visitors will now be able to enjoy the giant redwoods more, knowing that
the trees are being protected. (29)
