Report card FAQ

Are these marks equal to letter grades?
No. The performance scale carefully describes a
student’s progress on meeting expectations in
different areas of grade-level academic standards.
Students are no longer receiving a single mark for a
subject. All K-5 elementary grade levels use the four-
point scale.

What are these marks based on?

Marks on the performance scale are based on
multiple classroom assessments such as tests,
projects, assignments, quizzes and teacher
observation. State test scores are not included.

Are effort or behavior included in

the marks?
No. There is a separate section that the teacher
uses to report on how the student approaches
school called “Habits of a Student.”

Why is there more detail in Math and

Language Arts?
Skills in Language Arts and Math form the foundation
for learning in all subject areas. The detail reflects
specific areas students are learning at each grade level according to Common Core/Oregon State Standards. The
current Language Arts curriculum includes Social Studies. This explains the NAs under Social Studies. You can
discuss this further as needed at conferences in February.

Student progress F.A.Q.

Is my student on track?
The report card shows how your student is progressing toward grade-level expectations and standards for the
entire year. Students earning a “1” shows little evidence of learning the specific skills. A “2” means the student
has not fully met expectations but is clearly developing knowledge and skill toward the year-end grade-level
expectations. A “3” means the student demonstrates skills and understands concepts. The NA means that
content has not been covered or assessed in the first semester.

What opportunities are available second semester for a student receiving a 4?

Students who demonstrate a specific skill or concept above expectations in the first semester can continue to
be challenged by deepening and applying their knowledge in new and different situations.

How do I help my student improve/be successful?

If you feel your child needs extra support or wants to learn more about a subject, ask your child’s teacher if
there are resources to help his or her learning outside the classroom. Resources for helping your child learn
at home are available at school and online at http://www.pta.org/content.cfm?ItemNumber=2909
