Isolated Footing

This document provides the design of a footing to support a 300mm x 300mm column with an axial load of 427.55kN. It determines the footing size as 1.6m x 1.6m based on allowable soil bearing capacity. The thickness is determined as 400mm based on one-way and two-way shear capacity requirements. Reinforcement of 12mm diameter bars at 115mm centers both ways is designed to resist the bending moment of 84.84x106 Nmm at the column face. Load transfer from the footing to the column base is verified to be within permissible limits.

Design of Footing

1. Design Data
Axial force, Pu = 427.55KN
Column size = 300mm×300mm
Allowable bearing capacity of soil = 200KN/m2
Materials: M20 grade concrete
Fe 500 HYSD bars

2. Size of Footing
Assuming weight of footing plus backfill to constitute 15% pf Pu,
For economical proportion, length (L) and breadth (B) should satisfy,
(427.55×1.15)/BL ≤ 200
Which gives,
L = 1.6m, B = 1.6m
Provide footing base size of 1.6m×1.6m

3. Thickness of Footing based on shear

Factored (net) soil pressure, qu, max = 250.52KN/m2 = 0.251N/mm2

a) One way Shear

The critical section is located at a distance d away from the column face.
Factored shear force, Vu1 = 0.251×1600×(650-d) = (261040 – 401.6d)N
Assuming τc = 0.36MPa (for M20 concrete with nominal Pt = 0.25)
Vc1 = 0.36×1600×d = (576d)N
Vu1 ≤ Vuc  261040 – 401.6d ≤ 576d
d ≥ 267mm

b) Two way Shear

The critical section is located d/2 from the periphery of the column.
Vu2 = 0.251[1600×1600 – (300+d)2]
Assuming d = 267mm (min requirement for one way shear)
Vu2 = 561.87×103N

For two way shear resistance, limiting shear stress of concrete,

c2 = ks(0.25√fck)
= 1.118MPa
Vc2 = 1.118[300+d]4d = 1341.6d + 4.472d2
Vu2 ≤ Vc2  561.87×103 ≤ 1341.6d + 4.472d2
Solving, d ≥ 235mm
Hence one-way shear governs the footing slab thickness and d ≥ 267mm, say d = 300mm
Assuming a clear cover of 50mm and bar diameter of 12mm
D ≥ 320 + 50 + 12/2 = 356mmmm
Provide D = 400mm (for convenience)
Effective depth = 400 – 50 – 6 = 344mm

4. Design of flexural reinforcement

Factored moment at column face (in either direction):
Mu = 0.251×1600×6502/2 = 84.84×106Nmm
R Mu/Bd2 = 0.45MPa
(Pt)redq/100 = 0.111
Since Pt assumed for one way shear = 0.25 > 0.111
 (Ast)reqd = (0.25×1600×344)/100 = 1376mm2

Hence provide nominal reinforcement

i.e. 12mm bars @ 115mm c/c both ways.

5. Transfer of load at base of column

Permissible bearing pressure, qb = 0.45fck = 0.45×20 = 9N/mm2
A1 = 1.6×1.6 = 2.56m2
A2 = 0.3×0.3 = 0.09m2
𝐴1
√ = 5.33 ≯ 2
𝐴2

𝐴1
𝑞𝑝𝑒𝑚 = 𝑞𝑝 × √ = 9 × 2 = 18𝑁/𝑚𝑚2
𝐴2
𝑉 6𝑉
𝑞max 𝑎𝑡 𝑐𝑜𝑙 𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑒 = ( + 2 ) × 1.5 = 7.3𝑁/𝑚𝑚2 < 𝑞𝑝𝑒𝑚
𝐵𝐿 𝐵𝐿

Hence, OK.
