Problem 10.1 (Textbook Shuler and Kargi)

The document provides a table to be filled in with values to calculate: 1) The gradient (rate of change of DO concentration) for each time point. 2) The overall uptake rate (OUR) by taking the gradient between times 0-3 minutes when air is off. 3) The mass transfer coefficient (kLa) by plotting the gradient plus OUR against the saturation deficit and taking the slope of the line between times 8-15 minutes when air is on.

PROBLEM 10.

1 (TEXTBOOK SHULER AND KARGI)

Draw the table and fill in the values

Find the gradient for each Add the value of OUR with the
CL C*=7.3 mg/L
point gradient of each point
Time (min) DO (mg/L) (C*-CL) dCL/dt dCL/dt+OUR
-1.000 3.300 4.000
Air off 0.000 3.300 4.000
1.000 2.400 4.900
2.000 1.300 6.000
3.000 0.300 7.000
4.000 0.100 7.200
5.000 0.000 7.300
Air on 6.000 0.000 7.300
7.000 0.300 7.000
8.000 1.000 6.300 Gradient of point at t=8 (Gradient of point at t=8 ) +OUR
9.000 1.600 5.700 Gradient of point at t=9 (Gradient of point at t=9 ) +OUR
10.000 2.000 5.300 Gradient of point at t=10 (Gradient of point at t=10 ) +OUR
11.000 2.400 4.900 Gradient of point at t=11 (Gradient of point at t=11 ) +OUR
12.000 2.700 4.600 Gradient of point at t=12 (Gradient of point at t=12) +OUR
13.000 2.900 4.400 Gradient of point at t=13 (Gradient of point at t=13 ) +OUR
14.000 3.000 4.300 Gradient of point at t=14 (Gradient of point at t=14) +OUR
15.000 3.100 4.200 Gradient of point at t=15 (Gradient of point at t=15 ) +OUR
16.000 3.200 4.100
17.000 3.200 4.100
To find OUR:

Plot graph DO (mg/mL) vs. time (min)

OUR =slope of graph at time from 0-3 min = 1.01 mg/Lmin

To find kLa:

Calculate dCL/dt for each point starting from time 8 -15 min (at the exponential line) and fill in the table.
Plot graph of (dCL/dt+OUR) vs. (C*-CL)

Slope of the graph = kLa= 0.265 min-1
