Sea Shell Trincomalee

This document proposes a sewer and wastewater treatment system for a new Sea Shells Hotel being built in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka. It estimates a daily wastewater flow of 25 cubic meters based on water consumption calculations. It then outlines the treatment process, which will include preliminary treatment, anaerobic treatment, aerobic treatment, sludge digestion, clarification, filtration, chlorination, and collection of treated water. The treated water will be reused for gardening and recharging a constructed earth pond. The effluent quality is expected to meet CEA standards before being discharged.

Project: Proposed Sea Shells Hotel at Trincomalee

Subject: Proposal for Sewer and waste water treatment and discharge system

1.0 Waste Loads

The treatment is required only for the foul and waste water from the Building Complexes and
solid waste is handled separately. There are 24 Suites. Waste water generation has been
calculated as below.

Assumptions

 Water consumption by a Guest per day = 240 l

 Water consumption by a Staff Member per day = 200 l
 Number of Guest = 48
 No of Staff = 67
 Assume daily water consumption is equal to waste water flow

1.0 Sewer and Waste water Treatment plant for Sea Shells Hotel at Trincomalee

Parameters of influent
Daily Water Usage = 240x48 + 67x200
Daily wastewater flow = 25 m3

Therefore Waste Water treatment facility of 30 m3 is constructed considering use of

restaurant by outsiders.

Typical characteristics of expected domestic wastewater with some kitchen waste.

BOD = 350mg/l

COD = 700mg/l

pH = 6-8

Oil & grease = 25mg/l

2.0 Site Allocated

Marked on attached site layout plan.

3.0 Treatment Process

Treatment process in general encompasses a biological treatment system as shown below.

The major unit processes shall comprise as follows.
TREATMENT PROCESSES SHALL BE SCHEMATICALLY SHOWN AS
FOLLOWS:
Wastewater

Preliminary treatment and physical processes

Grease traps, screening, grit removal

Anaerobic Treatment

Aerobic Treatment

Sludge Digester Clarifier

Filtration

Chlorination

Treated Water Collection

Treated Water for Gardening &

recharging Constructed earth Pond
(60m3)
4.0 Getting Approval

The treated effluent released from the Treatment Facility shall comply with the CEA
standards for tolerance limits for the discharge of Industrial Wastewater into Inland Surface
Waters (Gazette No 1534/18 of 01.02.2008). The quality of treated effluent shall be tested
and proved by an Independent Body.

The treated effluent accumulated from the total usage as 30m3/day. The treated effluent shall
be reused for gardening and recharging of constructed earth pond (60m3). Considerable
amount of treated effluent will be evaporated and percolate during this process due to the
high temperature and dryness of the soil.

De-sludging period shall be maximum one year.

Effluent Quality before directing to wetland

BOD- 30 mg/l

COD- 250 mg/l

pH- 6.0-8.5

Oil & grease – 10 mg/l max
