Calculate Reactive Power Rev 1

This document discusses calculating the reactive power of a capacitor bank needed to improve the power factor of a plant. It provides the steps to determine the reactive power (Qc) required based on the existing power factor (cosφ1), desired power factor (cosφ2), and installed active power (P). The example calculation determines a plant with 1660 kW of load at 0.87 power factor requires a 703.84 kVAR capacitor bank to increase the power factor to 0.99. Based on this, 10 units of 75 kVAR capacitors at 400V would be selected, with an additional 2 units for spare capacity.

Calculate reactive power of the capacitor bank and improve power factor
PROJECT : PLANT 300 DISSOLVER &TANK FARM PROJECT
OWNER : TGTK  CO.,LTD
CONSULT : OWNER

For the dimensioning of the capacitor bank to be installed in order to improve the power factor of a plant,
it is necessary to calculate correctly the power factor according to the consumption or to the load cycle of the plant.

Calculation of the necessary reactive power

Once the power factor (cosφ1) of the installation and the power factor to be obtained (cosφ2)
are known, it is possible to calculate the reactive power of the capacitor banknecessary
to improve the power factor.

Indicating by:
P – the installed active power
φ1 – the phase displacement angle before power factor correction
φ2 – the phase displacement angle to be obtained with the power factor correction
‐  the power of the capacitor bank bank Qc is:
cos Ø1 = P/S1 KW/KVA1
-1 O
Ø1 = COS P/S1  DEGREE
cos Ø2 = P/S2 KW/KVA2
Ø1 = COS-1 P/S2 O DEGREE

KVAR

Once the initial cosφ is known, Table 1 allows to calculate (in kvar per kW installed)
the power of the capacitor bank necessary to obtain a defined power factor.
In a three-phase system, the capacitor bank constituted by three capacitors
the same capacitance, can be delta connected or star connected.

Power factor correction table

Step for calculation

Transformer oil type rated 2500 KVA pf 0.85 active power = 2125 kw
and see data from load schedule
Input power actual load 1328 kw plus 125 % load = 1660 kw
In a plant with active power equal to 1660 kW at 400 V and cosφ= 0.87, we want to increase
the power factor up to 0.99. In the table 1 above,
at the intersection between the row "initial cos φ " 0.87 with the column "final cosφ" 0.98 read K = 0.424
Therefore a capacitor bank is necessary with power Qc equal to:

Qc = K ꞏ P = 0.337 ꞏ 1660 = 703,84 kvar

The factor K can be determined also using the following nomograph:
