This document outlines an group therapy activity called "Ants and Tigers" that discusses the qualities and strengths of each species. Participants are asked to reflect on which creature they see themselves as and would like to be. They are also prompted to think about situations in their own life where it would be beneficial to take on the qualities of either an ant or tiger. Group therapy ideas: Ants and Tigers (Perspectives, Empowerment, Feelings, Perceptions)

Therapist note: Only make one print of page 1 to do activity without optional written portion. Print
multiple copies of page 2 to use as handouts for optional written portion.

Intro:

Consider these two species of creature: Ants and tigers. As a group, briefly discuss the following larger
questions before moving on to specific, real life-related applications:

What are some qualities of each species?

What strengths does each kind of creature have that the other does not?
(e.g. tigers are solitary, self-sufficient, tough, brave, top of the food chain, physically big, powerful,
sometimes lazy when lounging; ants are small, team-oriented, task-centric, have definite roles, follow
directions, etc.)
Does one creature have more value than the other?

Discussion:

Now take a moment to silently reflect on the following questions by yourself, and feel free to write your
responses down. We will discuss your answers as a group in a few minutes.

Which of the two creatures do you see yourself as?

Which would you like to be?
Are there times when it would be more beneficial to be one creature over the other?

(After discussing these questions as a group, ask participants to offer scenarios in their life in which they
are having trouble deciding how to act and how to feel. For example: My mother is abusive and
sometimes calls me just to yell at me and put me down. Now it’s hard for me to make friends and
establish good relationships because I am afraid people will act like my mother.)

What would an ant do?

What would a tiger do?
Without thinking in this situation, am I more likely to act like a tiger or an ant? Why is this natural
for me?
In this type of situation, would it be better to act like a tiger or an ant? Why?
How does the ant/tiger analogy help me understand how I should act in this situation? What will or
would I do in this scenario now that I have thought about it more?
