Semester Project Report: Group Members

This semester project report describes a pulse generator and 7-segment counter display circuit built by two students. The circuit uses a NE555 timer IC to generate pulses that serve as a clock signal for a CD4026 IC driving a common cathode 7-segment display to count from 0 to 9. The students implemented the circuit on a breadboard first, then designed a PCB, though the counter IC was damaged during PCB fabrication. Potential applications of the pulse generator and counter modules are also discussed.

 NE555 Timer IC

 CD4026 IC

 7-segment display (Common Cathode type)

 Resistors (10K, 220, 100k )

 Capacitors (10uF,10nF)

 Battery (6 Volts)

 LED
 This project consists upon two modules;
Pulse Generator
7-segment Counter Display

 Pulse Generator:
Pulse is generated by using NE555 timer IC. The output pulse will be given as a clock to a
seven segment counter.

 7-segment Counter Display:

Counter is made by using CD4026 IC. The IC CD4026 can be performed as a counter as well
as a 7-segment (common cathode type) driver.
 Pulse generator is consists upon R1, Variable Resistor (VR), C1, C2 and NE555 IC.
 NE555 IC is working as Astable Multivibrator. It gives on & off (0 and 1) output
consistently which generates a pulse. If the 100k ohm resistor’s value lessened, the
frequency of pulse will increases. We can use 100k variable resistor. So, by
changing resistance, pulse frequency will increase which is the output of pulse
generator and given as a clock to a Seven Segment Counter Display.
 LED and R2 is also attached at the at the output of pulse generator. LED will on at
high pulse and off at low.
 Seven Segment Counter consists upon CD4026 IC and 7-segment display (common
cathode) is 0-9 counter display. IC CD4026 is a 7-segment (common cathode)
driver. This IC is trigger high. Whenever clock pulse becomes high, it will
increment 1 and display it on 7 segment.
On Breadboard: On PCB:
Counter on 7-segment has a various applications in in our daily life. We can observe
in our around there are many digital counters. This digital counter can be used as
object counter and much more with the slight changes.
In our daily life we see microwave, digital watches/wall clocks, in vehicle as a gear
indicator and digital speedometer etc.
The pulse generator module separately can be used in many places where we have
to apply square waves/pulses/astability. Pulse generators are also used to drive
devices such as switches, lasers and optical components, modulators, intensifiers as
well as resistive loads. The output of a pulse generator may also be used as the
modulation signal for a signal generator. Non-electronic applications include those
in material science, medical, physics and chemistry.
In our course we also implemented up/down counter by using Verilog (VHDL)
coding and implemented it on FPGA.
 During PCB making, the counter IC was damaged when we were drilling pads.
Otherwise our circuit is working perfectly.
