Vector Vs Raster Worksheet 3

Vector graphics use mathematical statements to place lines and shapes in a two-dimensional space. They are best for hard-edged graphics, logos, and illustrations as they can be resized without quality loss. Common file formats are .psd, .png, .jpeg, and .gif. Software like Adobe Illustrator and Inkscape are used to create vector graphics. Raster graphics use a grid of pixels to represent an image. Image quality degrades when resized. They are best for photo editing and digital paintings. Common file formats are .eps, .ai, and .cdr. Software like Microsoft Paint, Art Tool Sai, and Krita can be used to create raster graphics.

Vector Graphics VS Raster Graphics

Use the Internet to find the answers for the following.

Vector Graphics
Definition:
 Vector graphics are the creation of digital images through a sequence of
commands or mathematical statements that place lines and shapes in a
given two-dimensional or three-dimensional space. (Rouse, 2006)

Best used for:

 Hard-edged graphics
 Logos
 Illustrations (Ramella, 2018)

Situation examples:
 Vector graphics can be blown up to any size without reducing the quality of the image, this means that no
matter what, the image will always look perfect. These graphics are used on billboards and to create
company logos etc.

Common file formats:

 .psd  .png
 .jpeg  .gif
 .bmp (Auguste, 2019)

At least 1 Graphic example of each different file format (Source for bibliography)

(The Printing Connection, n.d.)

What software’s are used to create Vector Graphics

 Adobe Illustrator  Vectr
 Inkscape (Zak, 2018)

Raster Graphics
Definition:
 Raster graphics (also called bitmap graphics) are a type of digital image that uses tiny rectangular pixels, or
picture elements, arranged in a grid formation to represent an image. Image quality reduces if graphic is
blown up. (Encyclopaedia Britannica, n.d.)

Best used for:

 Photo editing
 Digital paintings

Situation examples:
 Raster graphics cannot be blown up to any size without reducing the image’s quality as the individual pixels
will only become larger. Meaning these types of graphics are more for everyday works, such as digital
artworks etc.

Common file formats:

 .eps
 .ai
 .cdr

At least 1 Graphic example of each different file format (Source for bibliography.)

Software used to create Raster Graphics

 Microsoft Paint
 Art Tool Sai
 Krita
