Operational Reporting Report Details

| Installing the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Operational

| Reporting Stand-alone Package
| The IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Operational Reporting feature automates your
| daily monitoring tasks, and generates reports that can tell you if a server requires
| attention. You can run the Operational Reporting interface on Windows only, but it
| supports servers running on any supported operating system. See the Readme file,
| included with the installation package, for a list of supported IBM Tivoli Storage
| Manager servers. Operational reporting views a Tivoli Storage Manager server as
| being in one of two states: Running Smoothly or Needs Attention. The state of a
| Tivoli Storage Manager server is automatically determined and a message can be
| sent to you in an e-mail, posted to the Web, or displayed on the management
| console. The message provides access to a status report that can be customized. If a
| server needs attention, the message describes any issues and provides
| recommendations for getting Tivoli Storage Manager running smoothly again.

| IBM Tivoli Storage Manager operational reporting is available as:

| v Part of the Tivoli Storage Manager management console included when the
| Tivoli Storage Manager Windows server and storage agent packages are
| installed.
| v A stand-alone package as an independent component. Use this package if you
| do not run Windows Tivoli Storage Manager servers or storage agents, and do
| not anticipate doing so in the future.
| The stand-alone package will not be allowed to install on a machine where the
| Tivoli Storage Manager server or storage agent is installed, and vice-versa. If you
| install the stand-alone version and later decide to install the Tivoli Storage
| Manager server on Windows, you must first uninstall the stand-alone console.

Generating Reports and Monitors from the Command Line

The operational reporting command line allows you to generate any report or
monitor which exists in the Tivoli Storage Manager Management Console. Some
advantages to using the command line are:
v You can include the command in your own scripts.
v Using the command line with the Windows Scheduler (available in the Windows
Control Panel) can help refine control of scheduling options. If you create a
Windows command file for operational reporting, you can use the Scheduler to
schedule the command file and you have multiple options for when to run it.
v It can help with debugging. In case a report does not run from the Management
Console, the command line may provide more detailed information about the
problem.

To obtain operational reports from the command line, open a Windows Command
Prompt and navigate to the server console directory.

Note: Before you can generate a report or monitor from the command line it must
first be defined by using the Tivoli Storage Manager Management Console.
After a report or monitor has been defined in the Management Console, it
can be run from the command line using the commands described below.

Chapter 21. Monitoring the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Server 627
The syntax for the command is:
tsmrept [options]

where the options are described in Table 40.

Examples Default values exist for each command line option, however, it is better
to explicitly provide at least the -computer, -instance, -type, and -name options. To
display this information for each defined report and monitor, issue the following
command:
tsmrept -type=list

The output will be similar to this:

-COMPUTER=tsmserv -INSTANCE="server1" -TYPE=report -NAME="daily report"
-COMPUTER=tsmserv -INSTANCE="server2" -TYPE=report -NAME="daily report"
-COMPUTER=tsmserv -INSTANCE="server2" -TYPE=report -NAME="drm report"
-COMPUTER=tsmserv -INSTANCE="server2" -TYPE=monitor -NAME="hourly monitor"
-COMPUTER=ss2 -INSTANCE="server1" -TYPE=report -NAME="daily report"
-COMPUTER=ss2 -INSTANCE="server1" -TYPE=report -NAME="kathy’s report"
-COMPUTER=ss2 -INSTANCE="server1" -TYPE=report -NAME="weekly report"
-COMPUTER=sunny -INSTANCE="server1" -TYPE=report -NAME="daily report"

You can then type in tsmrept on the command line and copy and paste any one of
the lines above. For example, to produce the drm report, you would issue the
following command:
tsmrept -COMPUTER=tsmserv -INSTANCE="server2" -TYPE=report -NAME="drm report"

The report is displayed on the screen as it is being produced. By default, the

command creates an HTML and a text version of the report in the console
directory. The file names consist of the computer, instance, type, and report name.
In this example, in addition to displaying the text on the screen, the following files
would be produced:
v tsmservserver2reptdrmreport.htm
v tsmservserver2reptdrmreport.txt
More Examples
v To get a list of defined reports and monitors:
