Chapter 21. Monitoring the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Server 623
Note: By default, the Report service and the Report command line options are
selected.
To view operational reports, click on the report name you want to see. The report
is displayed in the main panel of the Management Console. If you want a current
report, you can generate an instant report using either the current time or the
scheduled time. To use this feature, right click on the report you would like to
generate. A menu of the following options is displayed:
v Clear. This clears the current report displayed, but does not delete the report.
v Refresh Using Current Time. This report captures server data from the exact
time you refreshed the report back to the number of hours you chose to cover
specified in the report details. For example, if you refreshed the report at 5:00
p.m. on 11/23/03 and you chose to have the report cover a 24-hour period, you
would generate a report that spanned from 5:00 p.m. on 11/22/03 to 5:00 p.m.
on 11/23/03.
v Refresh Using Scheduled Time. This report captures server data starting from
the scheduled time to start, back to the number of hours you specified in the
1.
If the time you chose to monitor has not passed or you want an updated monitor,
you can generate an instant monitor using either the current time or scheduled
time. This allows you to generate monitors at any given time period. To use this
feature, right click on the monitor you would like to generate. A menu of the
following options will be displayed:
v Clear. This clears the current report displayed, but does not delete the report.
v Refresh Using Current Time. This monitor captures server data from the exact
time you refreshed the monitor backwards to the number of hours you specified
in Monitor Details. For example, if you refreshed the monitor at 5:00 p.m. on
11/23/03 and you chose to have the monitor cover a 24-hour period, you would
generate a monitor that spanned from 5:00 p.m. on 11/22/03 to 5:00 p.m. on
11/23/03.
v Refresh Using Scheduled Time. This monitor captures server data starting from
the scheduled minute to start, back to the number of hours you specified in
Monitor Details. For example, if you scheduled your monitor to start at Minute
30, covering an eight-hour period that repeats every 2 hours, and you refreshed
the monitor at 6:45 p.m. then you would generate a monitor that spanned from
10:30 am to 6:30 p.m., no matter what time you issued the refresh.
v Properties. This opens the Properties window for the monitor. From this
window, you can modify Monitor Details and add or remove E-mail and Net
Send Recipients.
v Remove. This deletes the monitor. You are no longer able to access this monitor
and must start over if you want to generate monitors.
v Send E-mail. This feature opens an E-mail composer with the appropriate
monitor already attached, allowing you to quickly add comments and send the
monitor to addresses in the E-mail Recipients list.
v View. This allows you to customize the view of the Management Console.
v Help. This displays the help for the Management Console.
Chapter 21. Monitoring the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Server 625
what errors or warnings have occurred during server operation. The following
features are available by right clicking on Activity Log in the main panel of the
Management Console:
v Clear. This clears the activity log displayed in the main panel of the
Management Console.
v Refresh. This refreshes the activity log and displays the output in the main
panel of the Management Console.
v Properties. This opens the properties window for the activity log.
– Activity Log tab. From this tab, you can enable automatic refresh and change
the refresh rate to an integer between 30 and 1440 minutes. You can also use
either a relative or absolute time to query the activity log. Relative time will
allow you to display messages that have occurred within the last 0 to 365
days, 0 to 23 hours and 0 to 59 minutes. If you want to be more specific in
the activity log query, use absolute time. This will allow you to capture an
exact time period by choosing a beginning date and time and an ending date
and time for the act log messages.
– Search tab. You can enable pattern matching to search for a specific Message
Number, Search string, Originator (All, Client, or Server), Session, Node
name, Client owner or Schedule name.
– Filter tab. This allows you to enable message filtering. You can add messages
you do not want displayed in your activity log query by either typing in the
actual message or the message name. You can also narrow messages down by
category, by choosing not to display information, warning or error messages.
By default only the Information box is checked.
v View. This allows you to customize the view of the Management Console.
v Help. This displays the help for the Management Console.
Note: Future schedule events will not be displayed. This query only provides
information on Started, Missed, Pending, Completed or Failed schedules.
You can use this feature by right clicking Scheduled Events. A menu of the
following options is displayed:
v Clear. This clears the scheduled events displayed in the main panel of the
Management Console.
v Refresh. This refreshes the scheduled events query and displays the output in
the main panel of the Management Console.
v Properties. From here, you can enable automatic refresh and change the refresh
rate to an integer between 5 and 1440 minutes. You can choose what event types
you want in the query. Possible event types are Started, Missed, Pending,
Completed and Failed. You can also use either a relative or absolute time to
query scheduled events. Relative time will allow you to display events that have
occurred within the last 0 to 365 days, 0 to 23 hours and 0 to 59 minutes. If you
want to be more specific in the query, use absolute time. This allows you to
capture an exact time period by choosing a beginning date and time and an
ending date and time for a query.
v View. This allows you to customize the view of the Management Console.
v Export List. This exports the scheduled events displayed on the Management
Console to a file. This option is displayed only after you use the refresh
function.
Viewing Sessions
This displays the current sessions in the main panel of the Management Console.
You can use this feature by right clicking on Sessions. A menu of the following
options will be displayed:
v Clear. This clears the sessions displayed in the main panel of the Management
Console.
v Refresh. This refreshes the current sessions and displays the output in the main
panel of the Management Console.
v Properties. From here, you can enable automatic refresh and change the refresh
rate to an integer between 1 and 1440 minutes.
v View. This allows you to customize the view of the Management Console.
v Export List. This command exports the session information displayed on the
Management Console to a file. This option will only be displayed after you have
used the refresh function.
v Help. This displays the help for the Management Console.
To obtain operational reports from the command line, open a Windows Command
Prompt and navigate to the server console directory.
Note: Before you can generate a report or monitor from the command line it must
first be defined by using the Tivoli Storage Manager Management Console.
After a report or monitor has been defined in the Management Console, it
can be run from the command line using the commands described below.
Chapter 21. Monitoring the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Server 627
The syntax for the command is:

-? Display the command help none
-help Display the command help none
Examples Default values exist for each command line option, however, it is better
to explicitly provide at least the -computer, -instance, -type, and -name options. To
display this information for each defined report and monitor, issue the following
command:
tsmrept -type=list
You can then type in tsmrept on the command line and copy and paste any one of
the lines above. For example, to produce the drm report, you would issue the
following command:
tsmrept -COMPUTER=tsmserv -INSTANCE="server2" -TYPE=report -NAME="drm report"
Chapter 21. Monitoring the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Server 629
cd /d "c:\program files\tivoli\tsm\console"
