The 1 Presentation CD214

This document provides an introduction to the course "Computer Graphics & Imaging CDS 214". It defines computer graphics as technology that processes and presents visual information on a computer. It discusses why computer graphics is studied, including for visualization, interaction, and interest in algorithms and simulation. A brief history is given of important developments in computer graphics from the 1960s onward. Many applications of computer graphics are outlined, such as user interfaces, design, scientific visualization, art, medicine, architecture, heritage, entertainment, and games. Related disciplines like computer vision, image processing, and data processing are mentioned. The course outline covers topics like digital image types, specifications, digitization, software, color correction, retouching, and conversion between raster and

Computer Graphics & Imaging

CDS 214

Introduction (1)
Dr. Ahmed Attia
2018
Definition - Computer Graphic

  involve technology to accept, process,

transform and present information in a visual
form that also concerns with producing
images (or animations) using a computer.
Why Study Computer Graphics?

 Visualization

– I like to see what I’m doing

– I like to show people what I’m doing
 Graphics is interesting
– Involves simulation, algorithms, architecture…
How many people actually want to interact with
their computer, cell phone, DVD player, ATM, or
car by entering text?
History Of Study Computer
Graphics?
History

  The term “computer graphics” was coined in 1960 by

William Fetter to describe new design methods that he
was developing at Boeing.
  He created a series of widely reproduced images on a
plotter exploring cockpit design using a 3D model of a
human body
First bump-mapped images (Blinn 1978)
First ray traced image (Whitted 1980)
Early texture-mapped image
(Catmull 1974)
