Grade 12 Animation Course Outline

Grade 12 Animation is a course curated to build a working knowledge of digital


computer animation from the perspective of a studio environment. Animation is a ubiquitous
artform that presents the illusion of movement and life through assets created by an artist. In
most studios these assets are either “Cutout” digital rigs, or digital hand drawn cells. In this
course we will be exploring the process of digital animation using these types of assets,
starting from a foundational approach, through to more advanced character animation, and
ending with a final project.

Course outcomes:
The student is expected to develop skills in the following areas:

● Students will gain a basic understanding of terms and knowledge of animation.


● Students will develop drawing skills with knowledge and skill based projects.
● Students will learn basic fundamentals of digital animation in Adobe Animate.
● Students will learn to build “Cutout” rigs and characters in Toonboom Harmony.
● Students will develop methods for 2D animation in Toonboom Harmony.
● Students will animate and perform character acting in Toonboom Harmony.
● Students will learn to work in a pipeline using Toonboom Harmony.
● Students will create their own unique final projects using Toonboom Harmony.
● Students will learn professional development.

Evaluation:
In this course you will be evaluated on development work, project work, and portfolio
work. Development work will be marked on completion. While project work will be marked
based on individuated criteria. Portfolio work is the sum of your development and project
work into showreel pieces for professionalism.

Developmental Work: 40%


● Inbetweening assignment
● Character design
● Bouncing balls
● Rough arm build
● Lamp build
● Flour sack
● Jumping lamp
● Character build
● Character jump/step test
● Character action
● Lipsync
Projects: 50%
● Unit 1 final assignment
● Personal Character Build
● Character walk cycle
● Final Project
Portfolio: 10%
● Midterm Portfolio
● Final project and show reel

Work ethic marking:

G
The student has been late two or less times in the term.
AND
The student has no unexcused absences. Please note that explained (I was in
Disneyland, It was my brothers hockey game) and excused (I was sick, I had a
doctor’s appointment, A family member died) are different.
AND
All work has been handed in on time.
AND
Uses class time effectively.
S
The student has been late four or less times in the term.
AND
The student has less than 3 unexcused absences.
AND
Ninety percent or more of the work has been handed in on time
AND
Mostly uses class time effectively.
N
The student has been late four or more times in the term
OR
The student has more than 3 unexcused absences.
OR
More than ten percent of the work has been handed in late.
OR
The student does not use class time effectively.
