DCP Technical Notes Digital Cinema Package

INTRODUCTION
Because of the recent years increasing problems with non­standard and wrongly­made 
DCP's, the cinema has considered it necessary to demand that all selected films should also 
be made available as video files that can be used in cases when the DCP can't be screened. 
This video file should be playable on a laptop computer with internet access or uploaded to an 
FTP account. For video and audio specifications see next section in this document. 

DCP PHYSICAL MEDIA


● Hardrive carrier should have CRU DataPort DX115 and/or USB2­compatible 
connectors. If external power is required the power plug should be a CEE 7/4 
(“Schuko”), CEE 7/7 or CEE 7/17 (“Europlug”). 
● The HDD should have 512 byte sectors. 4K sector (Advanded Format) disks are not 
guaranteed to work. 
● The harddrive should consist of a single partition specified as the first primary partition 
in an MBR partition table. This partition should be specified as type 0x83 (msdos). 
● The partition should be formatted with the ext2/ext3 or NTFS filesystem. 
● The partition should contain only the main feature, no other material is allowed 
(dubbed and/or subtitled versions of the main feature are allowed) 

DCP CONTENT AND FORMAT


● The DCP should be delivered in the “Interop” format. If delivered as a SMPTE­format it 
is the responsibility of the organization supplying the movie to ensure that the DCP will 
work with the D­Cinema systems used at the cinema. 
● Subtitles should be delivered burned into the picture. If delivered as a file embedded in 
the DCP, and/or as a Supplementary Package, it is the responsibility of the 
organization supplying the movie to ensure that the sub­titles are in sync with each 
frame of the entire movie, and interoperable with the D­Cinema systems used at the 
cinema. 
● DCP:s should preferably be unencrypted. If encrypted KDM:s should be valid one 
week prior to the screening and not end before the last day of the screening. 
● The ContentTitleText field of the CPL should adhere to the Digital Cinema Naming 
Convention and the main title should be roughly the same as what have been used in 
conversations with the cinema. 
● The active area of the picture should preferably be 1998x1080/3996x2160 (1:1.85 
Flat), 2048x858/4096x1716 (1:2.39 Scope) or 1920x1080/3840x2160 (1.78 HD). Other 
aspect ratios can be used as long as at least one of the horisontal/vertical dimensions 
extends to the maximum. Pillar­/letterboxing is not allowed!   
● Frames per second should be 24. Specifically 25 or 30 fps is NOT guaranteed to work! 
● The sound should be 24 bit, 48 kHz.­ The DCP should have at least 6 channels of 
audio. Allowed configurations are Mono (C), stereo (LR), Left+Center+Right (LRC), 5.1 
(L, R, C, LFE, Ls, Rs). Channels not in use should be padded with silence.
