Journal Reflection Colleen M. Hall The University of Kansas

The journal reflection analyzes a lesson plan video through the lens of evidence-based teaching practices discussed in class. It evaluates strengths and areas for improvement, and maintains a written record to modify future lessons. Upon re-watching, the author realized asking students about challenging concepts could foster more feedback. Overall, the reflection shows progress in classroom management and positive praise, though more could be done to teach social-emotional skills to students. This year, the author incorporated explicit lessons on life skills like etiquette and empathy to improve group work and behavior.

JOURNAL REFLECTION 2

Journal Reflection Teaching Video for Lesson Plan 3

Assignment Purpose

The purpose of this assignment was to analyze myself teaching while incorporating the

evidence based best practices we discussed and read in class. This module focused on the

importance of feedback for students and teachers. Examining the instruction in comparison to or

with the guidance of researched based practices are the guiding principles of the reflection

journal.

In addition to evaluating my teaching centered on evidence based journals, I was also

able to reflect on the positive areas of my educational techniques and to point out areas that

could use improvement. In conjunction with reflection, the purpose of the journal is to maintain a

written record of how a lesson could be modified and enhanced.

Revision

Upon watching the video that corresponded with the journal entry and PowerPoint, I

made an adjustment to the original journal entry. This adjustment is highlighted and serves as a

way I could have fostered additional feedback from my students. I did not think of it during the

initial reflection, but it is something I have incorporated into the unit this year. Asking the

students to discuss some of the topics that were a challenge as part of the closure reinforces those

concepts.

Reflection

Looking back on this journal entry takes me back to a time when I was trying to figure

out my classroom management, and how I wanted to proceed moving forward. I can see some of

the improvements I made regarding positive praise and a good behavior reward system.

However, I am also cognizant that I have more I could offer to my students regarding positive

social skills, coping skills, and empathetic group interactions. This year, I decided to incorporate

critical life skills within my computer class. For example, the students learn internet etiquette and

social manners as a combined unit. Prior to group work, they learn about empathy and

compassion. This new foundation has curved some of the negative behavior while increasing the

positive behavior. The inspiration behind this implementation was forged from the video and

journal entries I created last school year.
