ELPHINSTONE SECONDARY SCHOOL 1

The Foundations pathway is designed to provide students with the mathematical


understandings and critical thinking skills identified for post-secondary studies in
programs that do not require the study of calculus. Topics include financial
mathematics, geometry, measurement, number, logical reasoning, relations and
functions, statistics and probability. Students should check with school counsellors
regarding this course and post secondary requirements.

Overview:

Foundations of Mathematics 11 is a rigorous course which covers the following topics:

 forms of mathematical reasoning


 angle relationships
 graphical analysis:
o linear inequalities
o quadratic functions
o systems of equations
o optimization
 applications of statistics
 scale models
 financial literacy: compound interest, investments and loans

Evaluation:

Classwork - 50 %
Tests and Quizzes - 50 %

There will be a final exam at the end of the semester worth 20% of your overall grade if
neccessary.

Expectations

This is a very big, and challenging course. You must keep up with your daily assignments
and work hard to do well in this course. Remember, YOU have chosen to take a
rigorous math 11 courses and your work ethic should be reflective of this choice.

 Follow the School Code of Conduct


 Students are responsible for work that is missed during an absence.
 If a student is absent for an assessment , it is his/her responsibility, within two
school days upon returning, to contact the teacher to arrange a make-up time to
complete the assessment.
 Homework that is handed in must include a student's name and page number; all
work must be shown where appropriate.
 Homework from the textbook should be marked by the student as they work all
homework should be error free.
