CENTERING TOOL for CLAY

Centering the clay is the most important ele-
ment in throwing clay. This handy tool teach-
es each beginner the “feel” of centering the
clay while throwing on the wheel. Beginners,
both adults and children, become discouraged
when unable to grasp the technique of cen-

This clay sticks to most materials, including glass,
plastic, and metal, and has numerous uses and
applications. School projects are a snap with this
white, non-toxic, modeling compound. This clay
completely hardens, with very little shrinkage, after
air drying for about 24 to 48 hours so there’s no
firing required. Once opened, put your remaining
clay, with a wet paper towel, in a seal tight bag and
place in the refrigerator until you need it again.

metallic paints. Fill up the well with your medium, and let
our engineered design do its job of a NO DRIP OR SPILL

pen does not allow for interchangeable tips. We, however,

PRO-LINE TOOLS
MADE FROM “KNIFE QUALITY” HARDENED AND
TEMPERED HIGH CARBON STEEL

Kemper PRO-LINE tools are crafted from select hardwood handles. The steel loops and blades are made
from “knife quality” high carbon steel that has been heat treated and quenched in oil to give the blades
maximum hardness and durability. Because high carbon steel takes and holds a sharper and longer lasting
edge than stainless, these tools last much longer even when used with highly groged clays and plaster.

All of Kemper’s PRO-LINE tools are retained by brass ferrules and firmly set with industrial adhesives to
protect against water and prevent them from coming loose. In addition each handle is immersed in an oil
resin bath to seal the handle against water damage and prolong the life of the tools.

Since the cutting loops are made from high carbon steel which can rust, we recommend that the tools be
kept clean and dry when not in use. Periodically applying a light coat of oil to the both the blade and han-
dle will prolong the life of the tools.

Should the need arise these tools can be resharpened if necessary. However, do not use a power grinder as
too much heat may be generated which will destroy the temper of the tools. Kemper recommends that a
whetstone, either oil or water, be used to restore your tool’s keen edge without damaging the tool.

Jack Kemper, at the request of a friend who was a ceramic teacher, created a simple, well constructed tool
in his garage workshop. The tool was constructed of the best quality materials. Not satisfied with creating
just a functional tool, Kemper believed that tools for creating works of art should fit comfortably in the
artists’ hand.

In 1947, Jack Kemper took the first step toward establishing a company dedicated to providing quality
products and service. Kemper’s desire to go beyond the norm with service, price and quality has survived
for over 50 years, along with company motto of “Tools That Craft The Hand Of The Artist”.

Responding to the needs of teachers, artists, hobbyists and manufacturers, Kemper has emerged as the
world’s largest manufacturer of pottery, sculpting and ceramic tools.

In this rapidly changing field, Kemper has continued to strive to bring you the latest product of innovative
design along with the old fashioned value of personalized customer service.

Interest became widespread....

Jack Kemper’s reputation grew. Ceramists, potters and sculptors turned to Kemper for special tools. He
combined practical know-how and a sense of design with the study of tolls from the early Romans. Al-
though most of the 500 various tools we now have no predecessors, several bear resemblance to their clas-
sic ancestors, and are themselves examples of fine sculpture. Under tutelage of 96 years old master crafts-
man, Anthony Rigotty, Kemper studied techniques in creating fine wooden modeling tools. A short time
later, he purchased the Anthony Rigotty company and incorporated many of those designs and patterns
into the production of Kemper Manufacturing.

In 1981, Jack Kemper retired, selling the company to Kemper’s’ Vice President, Herb Stampfl. Herb origi-
nally started at Kemper Manufacturing as an engineer. Today, Herb is the President of Kemper Enterpris-
es, Inc. and not only runs the business but designs the latest tools (I think he likes this part the best). Herb
continues the tradition of top quality product.

In 1982 a line of doll making tools was added. Designing tools to fit the needs of doll artists was just the
beginning. Needing components to create a doll from start to finish, Kemper added a complete line of doll
accessories.
