50
of y on x is y =1140 .05 + 72 .1x +32 .15 x 2
Q.5 Fit a second degree parabola to the following data:-
x : 1.0 1.5 2.0 2.5 3.0 3.5 4.0

Binomial Distribution:-

Q.6 Find the mean, variance and standard deviation of binomial distribution.
Q.7 Out of 800 families with 4 children each, how many families would be
expected to have:-
(i) 2 boys and 2 girls
(ii) at least 1 boy
(iii) no girl
(iv) at most 2 girls? Assume equal probabilities for boys and girls.
Q.8 In a bombing action there is 50% chance, that any bomb will strike the
target. Two direct hits needed to destroy the target completely. How many
bombs are required to be dropped to give a 99% chance or better of
completely destroying the target?
Q.9 The probability that a bomb dropped from a plane will strike the target
is 1/5. If six bombs are dropped, find the probability that:-
(i) exactly 2 will strike the target.
(ii) at least 2 will strike the target.
Q.10 Fit a binomial distribution to the following data and compare the
theoretical frequencies with actual ones:
x: 0 1 2 3 4 5
y: 2 14 20 34 22 8
Q.11 A set of 8 biased coins was tossed 256 times and the frequencies of
heads obtained are given below:-
No. of heads ( x ): 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
8
Frequencies ( f ): 2 6 24 63 64 50 36 10 1
Fit a binomial distribution to this data and find theoretical frequencies.

Poisson Distribution:-

Q.12 Find the mean, variance and standard deviation of Poisson distribution.
Q.13 In a certain factory turning razor blades, there is a small chance of
0.002 for any blade to be defective. The blades are in packets of 10. Use
Poisson’s distribution to calculate the approximate no. of packets containing
no defective, 1 defective and 2 defective blades respectively in a
consignment of 50,000 packets.
Q.14 If the probability that an individual suffers a bad reaction from a
certain injection is 0.001, determine the probability that out of 2000
individuals
(i) exactly 3 (ii) more than 2 individuals
(iii) none (iv) more than 1 individuals
will suffer a bad reaction.
Q.15 A car-hire firm two cars, which it hires out day by day. The no. of
demands for a car on each day is distributed as a Poisson distribution with
mean 1.5. calculate the proportion of days on which neither car is used and
the proportion of days on which some demand is refused.
Q.16 Fit a Poisson’s distribution to the set of observations:-
R: 0 1 2 3 4
f : 122 60 15 2 1
