Installation (if you don’t have Oblivion by Steam)

• Nehrim is not a normal mod and is not installed as you normally install mods. Our
Installer does all the work for you, but we would like to explain what it actually does.
• Since Nehrim is a total conversion, it would not be advisable to install the mod directly into
the Oblivion installation folder – because in doing so there is simply too much data that will
be overwritten.
• Instead the installer automatically locates your Oblivion directory and copies out all the
needed information to play Nehrim into the Nehrim folder. This is a location on your hard
drive selectable by you.
WARNING: If you are using Windows Vista or 7, then please do not install Nehrim into one of
the Program Folders (Program, Program Files, Program(x86), Program Files (x86)). Because
of the Windows security checks this can cause problems.
• Now you have two Oblivions installed, but in separate folders. The advantage of this is that
at any time you can switch between your regular Oblivion game and Nehrim.

Installation (if you have Oblivion by Steam)

• Steam is a little rigid concerning its copy protection. Unfortunately, due to that feature you
can't have Nehrim and Oblivion installed separately, so you will have to overwrite Oblivion
with your Nehrim installation.
• First create a copy of your Oblivion folder as a backup. You can find this in the folder
Steam/SteamApps/common.
• Now you can execute the Nehrim installer, choosing any place on your harddrive for
installation.
WARNING: If you are using Windows Vista or 7, then please do not install Nehrim into one of
the Program Folders (Program, Program Files, Program(x86), Program Files (x86)). Because
of the Windows security checks this can cause problems.
• When the installation is complete, go to the folder where you have installed Nehrim. Copy
and paste ALL of it into your Oblivion folder (Steam/SteamApps\common).
Starting Nehrim (if you don’t have Oblivion by Steam)
• After the installation is complete you will find a “Nehrim – At Fate's Edge” icon on your
desktop. This is a system launcher developed by SureAI that works like the already known
Oblivion Launcher but with a few additional features. Still DO NOT click “Play” yet!
Because just as you do with other mods, you must first activate the Nehrim files.
• Therefore click on “Data Files” and uncheck ALL game files that you have activated. To
play Nehrim now enable “Nehrim.esm”, “NehrimData.esp” and “NehrimEnglish.esp”.
NOTHING ELSE! All files that have anything to do with Oblivion must be disabled or the
game will crash.
• Now you can click the “Play” button. You can check to see if there is an update for Nehrim
by using the Nehrim Launcher (you need only to communicate with the update server by
clicking on the arrow next to the “Update” button and then activate the check box). Then
using the link provided, you can download the update or let the launcher download it
automatically.
Starting Nehrim (if you have Oblivion by Steam)
• Unfortunately, you cannot use the Launcher provided by SureAI with Steam to start Nehrim.
Therefore, click as usual on the Oblivion start icon. Nevertheless, DO NOT click “Play”
yet! Just as you do with other mods you must first activate the Nehrim files.
• Therefore click on “Data Files” and uncheck ALL game files that you have activated. To
play Nehrim now enable “Nehrim.esm” and “NehrimData.esp”. NOTHING ELSE! All
files that have anything to do with Oblivion must be disabled or the game will crash.
Content of Nehrim
Nehrim offers you a completely new world to explore that has nothing in common with Oblivion. It
is a completely new game that can easily occupy 40-50 hours of game play and includes:
• a new continent that is as big as the world of Oblivion, completely constructed by hand,
• an extensive main quest that takes you to all parts of the country and beyond (or under it),
• a number of side quests, which will also lead you far and wide,
• professional sound recording throughout the game,
• a new, self-composition soundtrack,
• new videos,
• a new game play feeling due to an experience points based leveling system in place of the
Oblivion level scaling,
• new armor and weapons, some of which are specially designed for a particular class,
• new graphic effects.

How Nehrim is different from Oblivion

Nehrim makes some changes to the game mechanics. It is advisable to understand these changes
because this will give you a more enjoyable game playing experience.
• The difficulty slider is strongly defused and will cause only minimum changes.
• Bows do more damage than in Oblivion.
• Sneak attacks also cause more damage.
• Naturally, the player will also thereby receive more damage. Therefore dodge and blocking
are very important.
• Magic is now a more powerful tool. There are spells that you can use to easily keep
opponents at bay. Fire balls can knock down opponents and ice spells can freeze them. The
damage inflicted by spells is generally higher than in Oblivion.
• Blocking is more effective than in Oblivion because it absorbs more damage.
• There is no conjuration magic in Nehrim. It might still be included later.
• In Oblivion your skills increased based on how often you used them. In Nehrim they
increase very slowly with use, therefore you must raise skills with the help of trainers. This
training costs you learning points (each time you level up you gain some) and gold (where
you get that from is up to you). The teachers can only train your skill up to the level of 90,
after that you must raise them by use.
• You raise your level by gaining experience points. These you get by solving quests,
defeating enemies, discovering places, opening locks and crafting items or goods.
• There are fewer Quest markers than in Oblivion.
• You cannot use a fast travel system like that of Oblivion – to move quickly, you can ride a
donkey or horse or use various teleport spells.
• If you encounter a teacher, this will be noted in your journal so you can find them again
quickly.
Important Information for a fluid game play
• “Save often, save early” – Unfortunately, on some hardware systems Nehrim is prone to
crashes, which we can hardly prevent with our limited resources. Therefore, it is advisable
to save often – this is done quickly using the quick save button.
• In one region of the game (the Dark Wood) a performance drop occurs when a spell is cast.
The solution for this is to temporarily turn off distant land. The quickest way to do that is to
open the console with the “~” key and typing “tll”. Likewise, it can be turned back with this
same command.
• If you encounter a trainer/teacher who does not offer you any option to increase your skills,
then you either have no learning points, not enough gold, or it might be that that particular
skill has already reached a value of 90 or more.
• You may also encounter a merchant who does not want to deal with you, then this means
that they are not in the right place or it is not the right time for that. For instance, a merchant
whom you have just awoken from sleep will not offer any goods for sale.
• The Nehrim game saves are saved in the same folder as the Oblivion game saves. If you
want to avoid a hodgepodge, we recommend that you move your Oblivion game saves out
of this folder into a backup folder. Then when you want to play Oblivion again, do the same
with your Nehrim game saves and swap them with the Oblivion game saves. Your game
saves are usually found in My Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Saves.
• If you have a long list of mods and don't want to activate all of them by hand every time you
change between Nehrim and Oblivion, you can save the list of your activated mods. You'll
find this list doing the following:
Press the Windows button and R, then type %appdata%, navigate back to the folder
AppData/Local, open the folder Oblivion. The list is named Plugins.txt.
• If your screen becomes completely black in game and you have a Nvidia graphics card, you
must disable HDR in the options.
• If your game runs very slowly please try disconnecting all joystick/gamepad/steering wheels
and all other similar devices from your computer.
• If you experience frequent crashes to desktop, disable your anti-aliasing both in the game
options and your graphic card driver. Also, disable auto-save in your game options.
Help, the game will not start!

First be sure that your installation went exactly as described here.

1. Possibility - Patch forgotten

Although Nehrim does not need Shivering Isles, Oblivion must be updated with the latest patch
(1.2.0416). If you use the Game of the Year Version of Oblivion, you may think that the newest
patch is automatically provided with it, but be aware: The GOTY edition only contains the latest
patch if you have installed Shivering Isles with it. If not, then install it or download the patch (for
Oblivion, not for Shivering Isles) from http://elderscrolls.com/downloads/updates_patches.htm and
install it.

2. Possibility - Wrong INI-Data Configuration

A common reason for this is that the file:

"My Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Oblivion.ini"

has some changes in it that will cause Nehrim not to work. The simplest solution is to rename this
file or move it (or delete it if it is certainly no longer needed), so Nehrim will not find it. The next
time Nehrim starts it will create a whole new, fresh and accurate Oblivion.ini. Then you must,
however, again reset any new game settings and ini tweaks you previously had or want to use.

3. Possibility – Wrong game files activated

In the option “Data Files”, make sure that only the files Nehrim.esm, NehrimEnglish.esp and
NehrimData.esp are enabled. ALL OTHER GAME FILES MUST BE DISABLED.

4. Possibility - Corrupt Oblivion Installation

Sometimes the Oblivion installation gets damaged, which also affects Nehrim. For instance you
may have moved the Oblivion folder or reinstalled Windows without having uninstalled your
games. It may help to make a fresh installation of Oblivion.

5. Possibility – Installed into the wrong folder

Nehrim should not be installed into the Oblivion folder or into the Program/Program Files (x86)
folders. If this is the case with you then uninstall Nehrim and install it into a different folder.
