This publication describes the general product specifications of the Yaskawa LFG type SF6 load
break switches of the following Model Numbers:
The following international standards are applied to the LFG load break switch described in this
specification:
The LFG type load break switch are designed and manufactured for operation (use) at their
standard ratings in the typical service conditions as follows;
(1) where the ambient temperature is not greater than 50 °C or less than -25 °C.
(2) where the altitude does not exceed 2300 meters above sea level.
(3) where the relative humidity is up to 100%, non-condensing.
If LFG load break switch is used at unusual condition than above, please consult to Yaskawa
Electric Corporation at the address listed in the cover page of this specification.

2.1 Nameplate
Nameplate including rating information shall be equipped on the side of the load break switch.
The detail drawing of nameplate is shown in Attachment B.
2.2 Painting
The LFG load break switch was designed and design tested according to specified international
standard by the Yaskawa Electric Corporation. Each LFG load break switch is manufactured at
the Yaskawa Electric Corporation: The load break switch, its linkages, and other subcomponents
are assembled and tested at the factory in accordance with the requirements of Yaskawa’s ISO
9001 certified Quality Program. Further details on the design characteristics of the LFG load
break switch and/or the provisions of Yaskawa’s Quality Program are available by contacting
Yaskawa Electric Corporation at the address listed in the cover page of this specification.
The fully assembled LFG load break switch has ample mechanical strength to withstand the
stresses incidental to handling, transporting, mounting, operation at the rated value and use within
the capabilities described herein. The LFG load break switch and its subcomponents will not
unduly change their characteristics due to aging, temperature variations, moisture, or erosion when
installed, maintained, and utilized in a manner consistent with the guidelines defined in the
Yaskawa Instruction Manual and this Technical Specification.
The LFG load break switch when proper installed and utilized will not require delicate or frequent
adjustments, will not wear or loosen excessively during routine operation, and will not require
frequent periodical lubrication(s).
The basic construction of the LFG load break switch includes Primary contacts, Bushing,
Mechanism, associated Control Parts, and Wiring. The Primary contacts are contained in one
vessel filled with SF6 gas. The Mechanism includes the necessary linkages and springs of sufficient
mechanical strength and spring energy storage capability for the performance of the closing-
opening operation(s) at the rated current value and use within the capabilities described in this
Technical Specification. The Control Parts include a Charging Motor that provide for proper
operation of the load break switch. The LFG load break switch is typically wired per standard
factory specifications; however, the factory specifications can be changed to meet customer
specific requirements.
Details concerning the general structural features of the LFG load break switch follow.
3.2.1 Vessel
The vessels shall be made of stainless steel sheets (SUS304 or equivalent) of more than 2.5 mm in
thickness.
The vessel is suitably sealed to ensure that the gas leakage rate (and subsequently the gas pressure)
specified in Section 4.8 of this specification is maintained for lifetime.
The design of the gaskets and the gasket seats associated with the vessel ensure that the gaskets
will not be displaced by the pressure resulting from operation of the load break switch at rated
value or at other capabilities specified by Yaskawa.

3.2.2 Medium
The vessels are filled with SF6 (Sulfur Hexafluoride) gas, which serves as the medium for isolation
and quenching the arc.
3.2.4 Contacts
The portions of the movable and stationary contacts (in the primary circuit) that are exposed to the
effect of the arc energy are constructed of materials that have ample strength to withstand all
ranges of the arc within the rated value. The strength of the contacts also minimizes contact wear
from the arc energy.
The contacts are multi-point contacts that will maintain the necessary contact pressure for an
indefinite period of time.
The sliding contact portions of the moveable contacts provide a path for the primary current and
are not exposed to the effects of the arc energy.
3.2.6 Bushing
The bushings, which support the stationary and moveable contacts, shall be constructed of high
quality porcelain materials that does not absorb moisture and has sufficient resistance against
sudden temperature variation.
The bushing shall have sufficient creepage distance and excellent strength against the salt-fog
polluted condition described in attached performance data sheet (Attachment A).
The bushing shall be unaffected by SF6 gas and/or SF6 gas by-products. These insulating
structures are designed and manufactured to have ample mechanical and electrical strength to
withstand the stresses incidental to operation at the rated values and use within the capabilities
defined in the Yaskawa Instruction Manual and this Technical Specification when installed,
maintained, and utilized in a manner consistent with these guidelines.
The detail of bushing is shown in Attachment F.
3.2.7 Absorbent
The absorbent shall be enclosed in the load break switch vessel to absorb the moisture and de-
composed SF6 gas caused by the electric Arc.

The LFG load break switch shall have a sufficient spring-stored energy storage capability for the
performance of the closing and opening operation at the rated current values and use within the
capabilities described herein.
The operating spring is typically motor-compressed (charged); however, the load break switch can
be manually operated to charge the spring and close or open the load break switch. The manual
handle operating force and speed does not influence the speed of the moving contact, resulting in
no affect on the switching capability.
The load break switch shall be operated from an opened to close condition by a closing command
from the controller. As soon as the operating spring is charged, the operating spring shall be
discharged to close the load break switch.
The load break switch shall be opened from an opening command by the controller. As soon as the
operating spring is charged, the operating spring shall be discharged to open the load break switch.
• Operating spring;
Closes and opens the load break switch by its stored energy
• Charging Motor;
Charges the operating spring
Basically, the charging motor are wired to a terminal block and other devices as illustrated in

The LFG load break switch is designed and manufactured under stringent quality control requirements
to meet or exceed the design requirements listed in the referenced international standards. Copies of the
Yaskawa Design (Type) Test Reports are available upon request. The general performance
characteristics of the LFG load break switch are as follows:
The LFG load break switch demonstrates an Insulation Resistance (IR) of greater than 1000 MΩ
with 1000 V megger being applied to each terminal (main circuit to earth, between poles, & phase
to phase) without any damage. The LFG demonstrates an IR of greater than 5 MΩ with 500 V
megger being applied to each terminal (control circuit to earth) without any damage.
The LFG load break switch has enough capability to interrupt the rated interrupting current in
accordance with the standard operating duty described in reference standard of this specification.
Please refer to Attachment A.
The LFG load break switch has enough capability to perform switching without load at least
20,000 times in accordance with the standard operating duty describe as follows.
The load break switch shall have enough capability to carry rated continuous current described in
attached performance data sheet within following temperature rise without any damages. Test
condition and criteria shall be demonstrated in accordance with the reference standard described as
follows.
Initial SF6 gas pressure is described at performance data sheet in this specification (Attachment
A).
The leakage ratio shall be less than 1 x 10-5 cc/sec.
Pressure switch shall operate at the pressure specified in the performance data of this specification
(Attachment A).
The expulsion membrane shall burst at 0.6 –0.8 MPa· G (87 – 116 psig).
