An educator understands various instructional strategies to help students build deep understanding of content and apply knowledge in relevant ways. For a secondary unit plan, the educator uses a concert band piece called "Appalachian Morning" that has historical connections and pedagogical uses. The educator creates a lesson where students make their own art inspired by the piece and a related painting to develop a deeper understanding across music and visual arts curriculum.

Instructional Strategies
A proficient educator understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to
encourage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to
build skills to apply knowledge in relevant ways.
In my secondary unit plan I use the concert band piece, Appalachian Morning by Robert
Sheldon which has a lot of historical connections and a lot of other pedagogical uses. A part I
focused on was aiding it with visual arts with a painting of the same title. I created a lesson plan
in which students got to make their own artistic creations during a class period and make their
own interpretations of the piece that I would help my students develop that deep understanding
of the piece. Communicating with the art teachers, I would also implore them to participate as
well if they can to solidify that cross-curriculum into visual arts and give my students some else
to do other than simply rehearsal after rehearsal of the piece.
