Study of JFET Characteristics AIM: To Study JFET Characteristics

This document outlines a study of the characteristics of a junction field effect transistor (JFET). The objectives are to understand how JFETs work, their features and characteristics. Specifically, it aims to study the pinch-off voltage, amplification factor, and transconductance of the JFET. The procedure applies input voltages, measures drain current and voltage, and derives dynamic drain resistance, amplification factor and transconductance from the recorded data. Graphs of drain current versus drain voltage are plotted for various gate voltages.

Study of JFET characteristics

AIM: To study JFET characteristics.

OBJECTIVES:
1. To learn working of Junction Field Effect transistor.
2. To understand the features of FET, JFET and their characteristics.
3. To study the pinch-off voltage, amplification factor and trans-conductance.

APPARATUS:
Experimental Board with in built DC power supply (-5 V DC, 12 V DC), JFET (BFW10/11)
milliammeter (0 - 25 mA), voltmeter ( 0 -10 V) or DMM etc
CIRCUIT DIAGRAMS:

1
PROCEDURE:
1. Make the circuit connections according to circuit diagram shown on board using Patch
Chord. Carefully look the polarities of the power supply.
2. Apply input voltage VGS and measure drain voltage w.r.t. drain current for different
readings.
3. Find the dynamic drain resistance, amplification factor and transconductance using given
formula.
4. Plot a graph of ID Vs VDS for various VGS
5. Observe the nature of graph and drain characteristics

FORMULAE:

1. Dynamic drain resistance : rd = (∆VDS / ∆ ID) for VGS = constant

2. Mutual conductance or transconductance: gm =(∆ID / ∆VGS) for VDS = constant
3. Amplification factor : µ =(∆VDS / ∆VGS) for constant ID = constant
