Lesson Plan Variations

The document provides a lesson plan for a mathematics class discussing direct variations. The lesson plan includes: 1) Introducing the topic of direct variations through examples relating the number of light bulbs turned on to watts of power and the price of books to the number bought. 2) Discussing the definition and steps to solve direct variation problems, working through an example problem as a class. 3) Having students individually answer direct variation questions to assess their understanding of expressing direct variations in equation form and calculating variable values.

Set Induction 1. Teacher greets the students.
(5 min)
2. Student are given a daily life situation
related to direct variation to introduce the
topic.

i) Students are shown a picture of 4

bulbs which are not light up.
ii) Students will be told that 1 bulb
requires 10 watts to light up.
iii) Teacher puts 10 watts of power
supply and shows that 1 bulb is
light up.
iv) Then, 10 watts more are added
become 20 watts and students
will answer how much bulbs will
light up.
v) Teacher add another 10 watts
become 30 watts and students
will answer how much bulbs will
light up.
vi) Students and teacher will discuss
the relationship between power
supply and the number of bulbs
light up.

- As more as power is supply,

more bulbs light up.

3. Students and teachers will discuss

another example of situation
which is related to the topic.
i) Students will be expose with
situation where teacher wants to
buy books.

ii) The price of 1 book is RM 1.00

iii) Students will be asked to guess

how much the teacher have to
pay to buy two books. The
answer is RM 2.00.

iv) Then, again students will be

asked to guess the total price that
the teacher have to pay if the
teacher wants to buy 3 books.the
answer is RM 3.00.

v) Students will be asked the

relationship between the number
of books buy and their total price.

- The increase of total books

buy, the increase the total
price.

4. students will be asked whether they are

excited to know the mathematics topic
that related to that situation.

5. Students will be exposed with the topic

that they will learn today which is
variations with sub topic, direct variation.
Development
(22 min) 1. Teacher discuss with students about
direct variations and the steps to answer
a question related to direct variation.

Steps
i.) Write y = kx
ii.) Substitute the value of y and x given
into the equation
iii.) Solve to find value of k
iv.) Re write original equation with value
for k substituted
v.) Substitute value given in question
into equation to find other value

2. Teacher shows the example question to

the students and shows the solution by
follow the steps.
Question :

Given 𝑦 varies directly as 𝑥 . 𝑦 = 32 when 𝑥 = 8.

a) Form an equation connecting 𝑥 and 𝑦.
b) Calculate the value of 𝑥 when 𝑦 = 40
c) Calculate the value of 𝑦 when 𝑥 = 7

Solutions :

a) 𝒚 𝜶 𝒙

i.) Write 𝒚 = 𝒌𝒙
𝑦 = 𝑘𝑥

ii.) Substitute the value of 𝒚 = 𝟑𝟐 and 𝒙 = 𝟖

given into the equation

32=𝑘 (8)

iii.) Solve to find value of 𝒌

32
𝑘= 8
=4
iv.) Re write original equation with value for 𝒌
substituted

𝑦 = 4𝑥

v.) Substitute value given in question into

equation to find other value

b) When 𝑦 = 40 ,

𝑦 = 4𝑥
40 = 4𝑥
4𝑥 = 40
40
𝑥 =
4
𝑥 = 10

c) When 𝑥 =7,

𝑦 = 4𝑥
𝑦 = 4(7)
𝑦 = 28

3. Students and teacher will discuss

together another question of direct
variation.
Question :

The amount of money raised at a charity

fundraiser is directly proportional to the
number of attendees . The amount of
money raised for 5 attendees was RM
100. How much money will be raised for
60 attenddees?

Solution :

Let : y = amount of money raised

X= number of attendees
Given 𝑦 ∝ 𝑥
When x=5 , y = RM100
Step 1 : 𝑦 = 𝑘𝑥
Step 2 : 100 = 𝑘 (5)
Step 3 : 𝑘 = 20
Step 4 : 𝑦 = 20𝑥
Step 5 : When x = 60,
𝑦 = 20(60)
𝑦 = 𝑅𝑀1200

4. Teacher will ask students to answer a

question of direct variation individually in
the handout given. ( 3 minutes )

Question :

Given 𝑦 varies directly as 𝑥 . 𝑦 = 24 when 𝑥 = 3.

a) Form an equation connecting 𝑥 and 𝑦.

b) Calculate the value of 𝑥 when 𝑦 = 48
c) Calculate the value of 𝑦 when 𝑥 = 5

Solution :

𝒂) 𝒚 𝜶 𝒙

i.) Write 𝒚 = 𝒌𝒙
𝑦 = 𝑘𝑥

ii.) Substitute the value of 𝒚 = 𝟐𝟒 and 𝒙 = 𝟑

given into the equation

24=𝑘 (3)
iii.) Solve to find value of 𝒌
24
𝑘= 3
=8
iv.) Re write original equation with value for 𝒌
substituted

𝑦 = 8𝑥

v.) Substitute value given in question into

equation to find other value

b) When 𝑦 = 48 ,

𝑦 = 8𝑥
48 = 8𝑥
8𝑥 = 48
48
𝑥 =
8
𝑥 = 6

c) When 𝑥 =5,

𝑦 = 8𝑥
𝑦 = 8(5)
𝑦 = 40

5. 4 students will be asked to come to the

front and share his/ her answer.

6. All students will check their answer

whether correct or wrong. And do
correction if their answer is wrong.

Group activity : Mix and Match

( 8 minutes )

1. Teacher asks the students to form 8

groups consist of 3-4 group member each

2. Students will be given a set of equations

3. There are 4 different questions and every

two groups will answer same question.

4. Teacher will read the instruction of the

games.
Student instruction :
i.) This set of answer consist true and
false information about direct
variations.

ii.) Pick the correct answer for each

question.

iii.) Place the answer in the space

provided.

iv.) All groups are given 4 minutes to

solve the question

5. Teacher will ask group representative

from each group stand up to share their
answer (2 groups at one time that answer
same question to compare).

6. groups are answer same question will be

given 1 minutes to present.

7. Students and teacher discuss together

the solution through the presentation.

Conclusion (3 min) 1. Students summarize the lesson of topic

of the day, direct variation.

i.) Student states the meaning of

direct variation

ii.) Student states the equation of

direct variation.

iii.) Student states the steps involved

to answer question of direct
variation.

Follow-up activity Students are given excercises as

homework,handout A and has to submit it in the
next class.
