Design & Drawing of Steel Structures PDF

The document contains instructions for a design and drawing exam for steel structures. It has two parts: Part A contains one design question requiring the design of a built-up column with lacing and sketch. Part B contains five shorter questions covering the design of a bracket connection, calculation of a column load capacity, design of a steel lintel, design of a plate girder section, and explanation of roof trusses and design loads. The exam is worth a total of 60 marks and tests knowledge of steel design and drawing.

III B. Tech II Semester Regular / Supplementary Examinations, April 2018
DESIGN & DRAWING OF STEEL STRUCTURES
(Civil Engineering)
Time: 3 Hours Max. Marks: 60
Note: Answer ONE question from PART-A.
Answer any THREE questions from PART-B. All questions carry equal marks.

PART-A
1 × 24 = 24M
1. a) Design a built up column section made with four angles (Toe to Toe) arranged in such a
manner that the overall dimension of the built up column is limited to 300x300mm.
Assume the axial load 1500kN acting on the column and effective length of column 6m.
Apply suitable design checks. (Use Fe410-fy250MPa) (12M)
b) Design an appropriate lacing system for the above built up column system. (6M)
c) Neatly sketch the arrangement of component members and weld jointing system. (6M)
2. Design a welded simply supported plate girder for a span of 28m. The girder is loaded with a
uniformly distributed load of the intensity 40kN/m due to dead and live loads. Consider the
steel grade as Fe410. Draw cross section of plate girder and end portion with end bearing
stiffeners of the plate girder. (24M)

PART-B
3 × 12 = 36M
1. A bracket is subjected to a load of 100 kN as shown in Fig. The bracket is welded to a
stanchion by means of three weld lines as indicated in Figure. Find out the size of the welds
so that the load is carried safely. (12M)

2. Calculate the design compressive load for stanchion [email protected] N/m, 3.5m high. The
column is restrained in direction and position at both the ends. Use Fe410 grade steel. (12M)

3. Design a lintel over an opening of 3.5m.The lintel is made in a wall 400mm thick. The lintel
has to support a uniform load of 50KN in addition to the masonry. The weight of the masonry
may be assumed to be 19.2 KN/m3 and the height of brickwork above the lintel is 4.0m. The
steel is of grade Fe 410. (12M)
4. Design the section of a plate girder of span 24 m to carry superimposed load of 35 kN/M.
Avoid use of the section bearing and intermediate stiffeners. Use Fe 415 steel. (12M)
5. a) Explain any three types of roof trusses. (6M)
b) Explain various design loads for designing of a truss. (6M)
