I Am Learning How Things Work!

Karam was playing with play-dough at daycare and making pretend pizza. When it was time to clean up, Karam did not want to stop playing and held onto the play-dough pizza. The teacher encouraged Karam to put the play-dough pizza in the microwave until after snack time. Karam did so and then helped clean up the rest of the toys and play-dough. The observation showed that Karam is learning about how things work in the world and is starting to understand rules and routines at daycare. Staff will continue supporting Karam's learning and development of communication skills.

I AM LEARNING HOW THINGS

WORK!
Child/Tama: Karam. Teacher/ Kaiako: Naema.
Date: 27th September/Whiringa-ā-nuku , 2018.
An- Nur Childcare.

Asalam-o-Alaikum, kia Ora Karam! Your last story was about your
developing ability to make good choices and get yourself in imaginative
play. According to our plan we kept reciprocal relationship with you to
continue your learning during these last few weeks. I followed your
interest and joined you at the play- dough table where I scaffold you to
manipulate the toys to extend your learning about how things work.

Today when we were making pretend pizza, teacher Ahlam diverted our
attention to tidy up time. You were not happy leaving your play in the
middle and were reluctant to put play-dough pizza back in the container.
You held play-dough pizza firmly in your hand and said loudly, “No.”
When I encouraged you by singing the ‘tidy up song’ you went in
thinking mode and got up and put play-dough-pizza in the microwave
and put the timer. I said, "Karam it is okay! You can leave your pizza in
the microwave and after kai you can play with it.” I got your attention
and then I added, “But now it is a tidy up time and you have to help me
to put the rest of play-dough and toys back and get ready for mat time.
You got the message and put the rest of play-dough from the chopping
board and put it in the container. Ka pai to mahi Karam (Good job)

What learning is happening?

Observation shows your growing understanding of the world around
you as you knew that pizza is not ready and you want to cook it in
the microwave. Karam you have started understanding the rules and
customs in the over 2 area as you listened and helped to put the toys
away. It is evident that you wanted to negotiate and are able to
make choices.

How can we extend this learning?

Insha’Allah Staff will continue keeping active reciprocal relationship
with you to further support you to understand the centre’s settings, rules
and routines. We will set-up a stimulating environment for example
bathing dolls to foster your creativity and further develop your verbal
and non-verbal communication skills. We will also continue supporting you to take more
responsibilities for your own and centre’s belongings.
