8 The research work carried out till date concentrated on design and implementation of pre- and post- processing
techniques necessary prior to assessment of aortic regurgitation (AR) using B-Mode echocardiographic images.
AR is a common heart valve disorder in old and middle age human population. The clinicians assess the valvular
abnormality by manual extraction of region of interest from echocardiographic images. Echocardiographic
images suffer due to unavoidable presence of multiplicative speckle noise; hence efforts had been made to clean
the images to enable clinicians to obtain higher AR assessment accuracies. The echocardiographic image
processing had been carried out using the MATLAB software. The applications of 48 existing filters and four
proposed methods were analyzed for the B-Mode echocardiographic (ultrasound) images acquired in multiple
windows and views. The performance was analyzed in terms of sixteen image quality metrics, visual quality
assessment and clinical validation. Both, traditional and blind assessment parameters were computed for
assessment of noise suppression, edge and structure preservation. The performance of extreme total variation
bilateral proposed by the coordinator of this proposal stood out in comparison to others. Synthetic images with
different amount of intensity in-homogeneity were delineated using 25 segmentation techniques and presently
working on advanced machine learning techniques such as, Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Genetic
Algorithm (GA) based features extraction, selection and classification of valuvlar heart abnormalities. The
applications of these techniques were also analyzed for the contouring of B-Mode echocardiographic images.
