6. Brief description of aims and content

This module aims at providing students with the knowledge of network services and server roles
which can be provided in the Microsoft windows server and Linux environment. It provide them
with the knowledge of how to install, troubleshoot and implement then in local Area and remote
network environments. This module also focus on Data and Network information system
Security

Knowledge and Understanding

Having successfully completed the module, students should be able to demonstrate the
knowledge and understanding of:

i. System administration under windows and Linux servers


ii. The concepts of Data Security and Management

Cognitive/Intellectual skills/ Application of knowledge

Having successfully completed the module, students should be able to:

i. Describe different event that occur and the protocols communications and involved
during the interaction between clients and server for network services and Email
Exchange services.
ii. Install the windows server Operating system and various network service and
Microsoft exchange service.
iii. Carry out administrative tasks in Linux and windows – add user, change or upgrade
security Levels and permission

Communication/ICT/Numeracy/ Analytic Techniques/Practical skills


Having successfully completed the module, students should be able to:
i. Utilize windows server monitoring and RSOF data to propose to solution to failures
ii. Produce implementation designs on based on roles and services that can provide
needed network services and function in an network
iii. Work with Active directory Domain services, Group policy, Domain Naming system,
Internet Name resolution process DNS roles and DNS roles both windows and Linux
iv. Work Dynamic host configuration protocol Service, DHCP Operation and
configuration with Windows and Linux.
v. Analyse security threats and identify security mechanism and their implementation

General transferable skills

Having successfully completed the module, students should be able to:


i. Troubleshoot network Services Failures in LANs having development of
windows servers
ii. Administer LANs
iii. Implement and administer e-mail servers based on Microsoft exchange server
iv. Support network users in organization Using Microsoft Outlook
v. Administer Linux Server
vi. Administer LANs using Linux server
vii. Administer websites using Linux installation of APACHee webserver
viii. Support users in a network combining Linux and windows Domain
ix. Troubleshoot and maintain Data and information system security in
organisation

8. Indicative Content

Active directory; meaning and concepts,, Active Directory Domain, Organization units and
Users groups, active directory database , and partitions, Global catalog servers, universal group
membership, universal principle roles FSFMO roles, functional level, testing activity directory
using DCDiagram.exe

Group policy management cancels using group policy to implement computer configuration,
backup and restore.

DHCP service: DHCP relay agent, installing DHCP, multi scope configuration, scope
authorization and activation, testing DHCP service

DHCP service : domain name system namespace ,DNS query and operation, DNS server roles
root hunts, DNS zone and zone file, DNS server setting, installing DNS service form control
panel, equipment for DNS service installation, testing DNS service email service: exchange
server version, architecture modules, exchange server components, services protocols,
installation and administration, Microsoft outlook, installation and administration.

Web services: installing IIS service, setting up default website, hosting multiple virtual
website/domains, configuring security website, configuring certificate for secure website.
FTP services: Explain purpose of FTP service, installation of FTP services, configuration of
FTP sites, anonymous and secure FTP. Computer networking: meaning of computer networks,
computer networking models open(OSI, DoD),IPV4 address and subnetting/routing/NAT

UNIX architecture: Unix kernel organization, Unix share, bash- bash futures

UNIX commands: using man pages, commands for working with files and directors using vim
editor, Managing users and groups , Working with file permission and ownership

Package management: installing software using Yast, Installing software for RPM, installing
software using ZIP, compling from source code using, tar, rpm, ./configure, make ,make install

Configuring Unix O/S for network connection: using ifconfig and ARP command.
Configuring interfaces using ifconfig and yest2, configuring routs using routs add and iproute,
commands DHCP installation and configuration: how DHCP works, installinf DHCPD
packages, DHCP configuration and setup of different models

DNS installation and configuration: BIND DNs packages, configuration files for DNS setup,
DNS zodes and zone file, configuring different DNS rules

APACHE web server installation and configuration: introducing APACHE installation


packages/APACHe (HTTPD. conf) directives, configuration files for APACHE web server.
APACHe single website, multiple host APACHE website, securing APACHE website and pages

FTP sever installation and configuration: FTP introduction, FTP categorization, installation
and configuration of FTP, Explaining vsftpd. conf directives.

Email server installation and setup: overview of typico email system, email- client, Email-
severs, Types of email clients, email service protocols, post fix and post fix configuration file,
installation and configuration file, installation and configuring postfix, installing and configuring
IMAP4 and POP3 servers, installing email clients thunderbird and squirremail

Monitoring tools and installation and setup: how Cacti works, installing Cacti packages,
configuring Cacti file and Cacti graph setups, overview of nagios, installation of nagios and
configuration. NTOP monitoring system, Installation and use.
Concept of Virtualization: types of virtualization, vendors and platform, VMkernel
HYpervision installation and configurations V-switching and routing, Xen and VMware
platforms

Security architecture: Attacks, Service, Mechanisms and their implementations, Port


forwarding, NAT, Firewalls and their configurations

8. LEARNING AND TEACHING STRATEGY


The theoretical lessons will be followed by tutorials/ seminars, guided readings and exercises, as well as
student practical works (individual or by group).

9. ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION STRATEGY


Assessment will consist of written/ oral assignments and tests.
